By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter
It’s the final interview. Your meeting The Grand Poobah full function. And then you blow it.
The Big Game Hunter, and I’m trying to illustrate one of those stupid final interview mistakes that people make, where they’re just too excited. And I’m obviously exaggerating quite a bit. If you’ve watched my videos, you know that I’m a little bit more subdued most of the time, and people get excited at final interviews. This is it. It’s me and another person competing for this job. I got this one in the bag. You know, it feels great, and you’re walking in and you’re meeting the Grand Poobah of the function. This is an important person, but you feel really good. You’re excited, and suddenly it’s all wrong, because you’re not the same person you were at the previous interviews.
You’re so wound up, you’re so excited, you know, it’s a turn off. You seem almost psycho. And the problem becomes, who wants to hire a psycho? Right? You’ll lose just from your behavior. My Reminder, if you feel you that you’re excited, get there a little bit early, but don’t go up to the offices. Hang out in your car. Hang out in a coffee shop, hang out somewhere where you can just take a minute and relax. Sit down. Do some deep breathing, inhale deeply and exhale slowly. Meditate for a few minutes. Do something that you find relaxing and enjoyable to calm your nerves. Because really, when you’re too excited, it’s too much nervousness, there’s too much adrenaline in your system. Drink a chamomile tea. Do something to slow yourself down to normalcy, because they don’t want to hire the exuberant one, you know, the one who sounds like they want to hire a normal human being who just happens to love what they do. So let it rip, but not over rip, if you know what I mean, you don’t want to come across like you’re a wrestler. You don’t want to come across as a psycho. You just want to be a great human being who delights in what they do, who enjoys it a heck of a lot, but doesn’t cross that line into bizarre behavior.
