The 5 smartest things to buy in August

1. Clothing (Average Discount: 22% Off)

Shop new clothing for the whole family, just in time for the new school year! Summer styles will be majorly marked down as retailers make room for fall fashions. It’s perfect timing, because the warm weather will be with us a little while longer anyway. Beyond back-to-school deals, you may see prices drop around the end of the month as early Labor Day sales kick off.

Get trendy styles for yourself and the whole family from these clothing brands:

  • Nordstrom
  • Woot!
  • Macy’s
  • Levi’s
  • Princess Polly

2. Footwear (Average Discount: 21% Off)

The start of a new school year is also the perfect time to go shoe shopping! While it’s definitely essential for younger students who likely go up at least one shoe size each school year, most brands will have adult sizes marked down, so teachers, parents, and anyone who knows where to look can score some savings too.

Here are brands we turn to for affordable footwear:

  • Journeys
  • adidas
  • PUMA
  • Nike
  • Rack Room Shoes

3. Computers & Electronics (Average Discount: 16% Off)

Computers and electronics are always marked down at this time of year for college students needing to save every penny they can. Whether you’re starting school or returning to school this semester, or just need to upgrade your personal tech, we’ve listed a couple of places to shop tech this time of year.

Shop these brands for great deals on computers & electronics:

  • Best Buy
  • Dell
  • LG
  • Samsung
  • SharkNinja

4. Office Supplies (Average Discount: 16% Off)

When your kids’ teachers make a list of all the essentials for the school year, it may be daunting, but there are plenty of places that are a back-to-school one-stop shop full of savings. It’s a great time to restock the home office too!

Here are some of our favorite retailers for scoring office supply deals and promos:

  • Office Depot OfficeMax
  • Walmart
  • CVS
  • Staples
  • Target

5. Sporting Goods (Average Discount: 16% Off)

At the start of summer, sporting goods are majorly in demand. However, at this point in the season, demand has dropped, and retailers want to make space for all things fall. Now is the time to score all of the outdoor equipment your heart desires at way better prices!

Check out sporting goods deals from these retailers we love:

  • Academy Sports + Outdoors
  • Amazon
  • Dick’s Sporting Goods
  • REI
  • Bass Pro Shops

The 5 things NOT to shop for in August

1. Mattresses

Throughout August, mattresses tend to be at their standard prices, but the next major drop will come soon during Labor Day Weekend sales. Spending extra weeks on a mattress that needs replacing isn’t easy, but hold out until September if you can to get a better price.

2. TVs

Markdowns on TVs in August are rare, and if there are some, they will most likely be on smaller, dorm-friendly models. However, TVs tend to be a hot-ticket item around Black Friday. If you really aren’t in a rush, you’ll also find doorbuster deals shortly before the Super Bowl.

3. Travel Gear

Since summer is peak travel season, all things travel remain in high demand throughout August, and that, of course, means high prices. Once fall arrives, vacation travel drops and you’ll see some great prices, especially as luggage brands attempt to clear inventory before the holidays.

4. Large Appliances

You’ll likely see some appliance deals in August, but the discounts will get deeper very soon once Labor Day deals get started. September is also a big month for manufacturers announcing new appliance models, which means the older ones will hit clearance. That’s a great time to strike while the deals are hot!

5. Fall Decor

You’ll see fall decor hit the shelves this month (and prepare yourself because it’s always super cute and tempting), but you’ll get better prices in the next couple of months. You may see some sweet markdowns in early September, but the best deals will be right after Halloween, so consider waiting and tucking your favorites away until next year.
