San Francisco 49ers owner and CEO Jed York found himself on the wrong side of the law over the weekend.
York, 46, was arrested Sunday in East Palestine, Ohio, after initially being accused of engaging in prostitution, according to court documents obtained by the New York Post.
The NFL executive was booked into the Columbiana County Jail following the arrest.
However, the prostitution charge did not ultimately stick.
On Monday, prosecutors amended the charge to disorderly conduct, and York pleaded no contest.
He also pleaded no contest to a separate misdemeanor count of possessing criminal tools.
A judge sentenced York to one day in jail for each offense, with the sentences served concurrently.
He was also ordered to pay $150 for the disorderly conduct conviction and another $1,000 for possessing criminal tools, according to court records. The fines have since been paid.
York reportedly posted $5,000 bond following his arrest.
The circumstances surrounding the “criminal tools” charge have not been publicly detailed.
Court records indicate that $160 seized during the arrest was forfeited to the Mahoning Valley Human Trafficking Task Force, while York’s cellphone was returned to him.
The arrest took place in an area with personal significance for York. He was born in Youngstown, Ohio, and has family ties to the region. East Palestine is roughly 30 minutes from Youngstown.
For many NFL fans, the situation will bring to mind the 2019 incident in which New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft was arrested in connection with prostitution charges.
York has served as the 49ers’ CEO since 2008 and currently oversees the organization alongside his duties as team owner. He has been with the franchise for more than two decades.
The 49ers have not publicly addressed the arrest.
The bizarre legal development comes just weeks before the start of the NFL regular season, with San Francisco scheduled to open its campaign against the Los Angeles Rams on September 10.
For York, however, the offseason has suddenly become about something far more serious than football.
