Movies come and go. But often, there are cinematic epics that stand the test of time and remain an incredible feat in visual storytelling and expert film-making. Jurassic Park is one such film that comes to mind. This modern blast from the past contains visual practical and CGI effects that have stood the test of time. It’s a film that is buoyed by a well-crafted script, a talented cast, and a legendary director. All of these variables coalesce into one exciting thrill ride that manages to feel like a modern film that is simply a period piece set in the 90s. Throughout the age of Hollywood, there are many films that have refused to go quietly into obscurity. Alien, Godfather, and 2001: A Space Odyssey are examples of such films.
In 2013, Alfonso Cuarón released a pulse-pounding space thriller that has widely been regarded as a modern cinematic masterpiece and may very well be added to this catologue of timeless classics in the years to come. Gravity stars Sandra Bullock and George Clooney as astronauts Dr. Ryan Stone and Matt Kowalski (respectively) must adapt during an unmitigated disaster in orbit. While Gravity is considered science fiction, Cuarón and company managed to make a grounded and realistic thriller set during an incredibly possible circumstance.

What is Gravity all about?
A seemingly routine spacewalk turns into nightmare
On a routine mission in orbit, the veteran astronaut Matt Kowalski (Clooney) is accompanied by Dr. Ryan Stone (Bullock), who is on her first mission in space to perform work on the Hubble Space Telescope. Of course, with any story carrying the label of “thriller”, nothing can or will be simple for our leading pair of protagonists. Due to a cloud of space debris, the astronauts’ shuttle is destroyed, forcing them into a battle for survival as they attempt to find a way to return to Earth safely. It’s a harrowing experience that ironically emphasizes the claustrophobic nature of feeling trapped and losing all control in the vastness of space.
At the time of the film’s release, Cuarón told The Guardian that the primary theme of the film is rooted in “adversity”, with the cloud of debris acting as this uncontrollable variable that shatters the characters’ world, leaving them to pick up the pieces. Gravity is a character-driven film with a story and climax that fully depends on the background and development of its leading heroes. It’s what makes the film exponentially more engaging. It’s also easy to place ourselves in the shoes of the inexperienced Dr. Stone, who has just experienced a traumatic situation. This, coupled with Bullock’s incredible performance, enables the film to cultivate an emotionally compelling connection with the audience.
