One of the best sci-fi reboots of all time is finally streaming free on Pluto TV

There are many sci-fi series that have left a lasting impression on fans. Star Trek is, of course, one of the oldest and most popular series, and who can forget the iconic opening crawl of Star Wars? But one sci-fi series still revered by many fans today is Battlestar Galactica. The original series aired in 1978 and was rebooted to critical acclaim in 2004. Though unlike Star Wars and Star Trek, it isn’t easy to find on any streaming service.

Battlestar Galactica used to be on Peacock, but it left the service in July 2023. It then moved to Prime Video for a while before leaving in May 2025. That meant the only way to stream any of the Battlestar Galactica series over the past year was to buy or rent them. Fortunately, Pluto TV is now here to save the day.

Pluto TV has announced that, starting on Friday, May 1, 2026, Battlestar Galactica will be available to stream for free on Pluto TV, marking its return to streaming.

In particular, Pluto TV will offer a couple of Battlestar Galactica series and a film available for free on demand (supported by ads):

  • Battlestar Galactica: The Miniseries (Season 1, 2004)
  • Battlestar Galactica (Seasons 1-4, 2004-2009)
  • Battlestar Galactica: The Plan (2009)

Additionally, Pluto TV is launching a dedicated Battlestar Galactica FAST (free ad-supported TV) channel that will air episodes of the series 24/7.

Battlestar Galactica is also coming to Paramount+

While Battlestar Galactica will land for free on Pluto TV on May 1, it will also become available on Paramount+ simultaneously. It will feature the same content Pluto TV has and also include an additional series: Caprica (2011), a prequel set 54 years before the fall of the Twelve Colonies, at the very beginning of the Battlestar Galactica Miniseries.

Paramount+ starts at $9 a month for the ad-supported Essential plan, while the ad-free Premium plan starts at $13 a month. However, as I mentioned earlier, you can still watch nearly all of Battlestar Galactica on Pluto TV for free, except for the one season of Caprica.

If you’re unfamiliar with the premise of Battlestar Galactica, it’s a sci-fi series centered on the last surviving humans from the Twelve Colonies of Kobol, a distant star system that is nearly destroyed by the Cylons, a cybernetic race created by humans as laborers and soldiers who eventually rebel and turn against their creators. The series follows the surviving human fleet as they flee through space in search of a new home, while being relentlessly pursued by the Cylons. It’s a story filled with high-stakes, action, and drama that’s hard to stop watching once you start. Trust me.

If you’re a sci-fi fan and have never watched Battlestar Galactica, I’d recommend giving it a shot on Pluto TV when it arrives on May 1 for free. And if you’re already a fan of the series, this is the perfect opportunity for a long-overdue rewatch.

Beyond Battlestar Galactica, there’s more sci-fi you can watch for free on Pluto TV, including many Star Trek series such as Star Trek: The Next Generation. Plus, if you’re looking for even more free shows and movies to stream, I highly recommend apps like Tubi, The Roku Channel, and Plex.
