While praise seems to have no intention of leaving Obsession alone, the psychological horror-thriller has now dethroned a box office record held by Bruce Lee’s Enter the Dragon for more than five decades. Made for just a few hundred thousand dollars, the twisted little nightmare has clawed its way through theaters and rewritten cinematic history on the way up. And while the One Wish Willow turned love into horror on screen, it seems to have granted director Curry Barker’s blockbuster wish off it.

From a microscopic budget to knocking a martial arts legend off his throne, Obsession has turned its box office journey into a twist even the film itself would struggle to top.

Obsession just turned $750K into a million giant

Directed by 26-year-old filmmaker Curry Barker, Obsession debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2025 before hitting theaters on May 15, 2026. The horror breakout has since collected more than $245 million domestically and $158 million internationally, pushing its worldwide total beyond $403 million. That run has taken it past Bruce Lee’s Enter the Dragon, the 1973 martial arts classic that cost around $850,000 and earned approximately $400 million across multiple releases.

The victory has also handed Focus Features the biggest hit in its 24-year history after the studio reportedly acquired the film for around $14 million following its festival debut. The theatrical run became so relentless that its video-on-demand release was delayed before the movie finally arrived on streaming platforms on June 30, with its 4K Blu-ray and DVD release scheduled for July 14. Apparently, Obsession made one wish and forgot to put a box office ceiling on it.

But the numbers are not the only trophies piling up around Curry Barker’s horror phenomenon, Obsession.

Obsession is now chasing awards after conquering the box office

Obsession’s monster theatrical run has arrived alongside growing recognition for its cast and creative team. Inde Navarrette, who plays Nikki opposite Michael Johnston’s Bear, has earned major attention for her performance, while the wider cast includes Cooper Tomlinson, Megan Lawless, Andy Richter, and Haley Fitzgerald. Barker, who wrote and directed the film after years of building an audience through short-form filmmaking online, has suddenly gone from YouTube creator to the man behind one of horror cinema’s most outrageous success stories.

And Barker is clearly not planning to enjoy the victory quietly. He has already filmed Anything But Ghosts, another horror project set in the same universe as Obsession and expected in 2027, while also lining up a new version of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. With further ideas reportedly circling stories about wishes going catastrophically wrong, Hollywood may want to be careful what it asks Barker for next.

Obsession may be a warning about wishes going terribly wrong, but for Curry Barker, the film’s record-smashing journey has turned into one wish Hollywood could hardly have scripted better.
