Netflix has unveiled the first teaser for Wonka’s The Golden Ticket, an unscripted competition series inspired by Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory. The biggest surprise is neither the elaborate chocolate-themed sets nor the challenges awaiting contestants. It is the unmistakable voice of Gene Wilder guiding viewers once again. With approval from Wilder’s estate, Netflix and production company Eureka Productions partnered with AI voice technology company ElevenLabs to recreate the late actor’s voice for the series. 

The competition series places 12 Golden Ticket winners and a guest of their choice inside a fantasy world inspired by both Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and the beloved 1971 film. Contestants will navigate games, puzzles, and moral tests that echo the lessons embedded in Dahl’s story while exploring sets modeled after the original movie. Karen B. Wilder, speaking on behalf of the Gene Wilder estate, said the family approved the project because generations continue to find joy and inspiration in his performance. 

Whether audiences embrace the technology is another conversation entirely. Yet judging by Gene Wilder’s own views on modern filmmaking, it is difficult to imagine that technological spectacle alone would have impressed him.
