Moment masked thieves pelt bakery owner with bread rolls before escaping with stolen cash: ‘It’s getting worse’

The owners of a popular Vietnamese bakery have said they fear for their safety after armed thieves allegedly targeted their business during an early-morning robbery.

Thi Ha and her husband Minh Nguyen were preparing to open Wallsend Bakery, west of Newcastle, shortly after 5am on Saturday when two masked figures entered the store.

The couple said they believed the two masked offenders were men and were carrying knives.

CCTV footage of the confrontation showed a light-coloured vehicle pulling up outside the bakery before two figures wearing hoodies entered the Nelson Street business.

One man ran behind the counter and started pulling money from the till into a tote bag as the second kept watch near the door.

Mr Nguyen spotted the commotion on CCTV from the kitchen at the back of the store and ran out to confront them.

One of the men threw bread rolls from a nearby shelf at Mr Nguyen and his wife before the pair sprinted back to the car and sped off with cash totalling $250.

The couple continued trading as normal on Saturday despite being shaken by the robbery.

‘We actually [do] not feel safe anymore,’ the couple wrote on social media, adding that an ‘incident’ had happened at the bakery in September, although they did not provide further details.

‘It’s really difficult for us after the event happened a few weeks ago. Then now it happen[s] again but getting worse.

‘[It’s] really hard for small businesses [to] keep their work nowadays. Stay safe everyone.’

The owners named local Wallsend MP Sonia Hornery in their plea for help, and the politician shared a public statement of support.

‘Another abhorrent attack. This is a lovely, hardworking family,’ Hornery said.

‘As small business owners, they deserve to be safe in our community. If you are able, please show your support for this wonderful small business.’

NSW Police confirmed to the Daily Mail on Thursday that no arrests have yet been made.

The community has rallied behind the bakery in recent days, but the owners said they are planning to abandon their 6am opening time and begin trading later as a safety precaution.

‘We lost some money (from the robbery) but we received a lot of love from the community,’ Ms Ha told news.com.au.

‘We had lots of customers, new and old, cheering us and checking in on us.

‘Me and my husband said that with all the money given to us we will put into a charity, to go to a lot of people who need it better than us, we are still working, we can make money.’

Anyone with information or relevant footage is urged to call Crime Stoppers.
