Leak suggests Nintendo finally is ready to play ball with YouTube

In an official X post from TeamYouTube, the Google-owned subsidiary appears to have accidentally confirmed the imminent launch of a dedicated YouTube app for the Nintendo Switch 2. The post, which has since been deleted, was in response to a user inquiring as to if and when the streaming service will land on Nintendo’s current-gen video game platform, with Reddit user docksdoctor11 highlighting the development over on the r/NintendoSwitch2 subreddit.

“Thank you for your inquiry. YouTube is not yet available on the Nintendo Switch 2, but it will be available soon. Please wait a little while until it is available. Also, please check here for a list of devices supported by YouTube,” the since-deleted TeamYouTube post read (via Nintendo Wire).

It’s worth noting that the TeamYouTube comment was made in Japanese, which was then automatically translated into English through Google Translate. As such, it’s possible that the precise context or meaning of the post has suffered a loss in translation to one degree or another, and so the reply itself should be taken with a grain of salt.

While this specific X post is no longer available, TeamYouTube has been replying to user inquiries surrounding the availability of a Switch 2 application for some time now. As recently as yesterday, the company replied to a post by stating that “YouTube is not yet available on the Nintendo Switch 2,” which, of course, implies that the streaming service will eventually make its way to the popular Nintendo gaming system.

The wait for YouTube on Switch 2 might soon be over

The steaming service is a perfect fit for Nintendo’s hybrid game console

Ever since the release of the original Switch back in 2017, Nintendo has been laser-focused on gaming itself, foregoing ‘smart’ functionalities like a web browser, a music player, on-device photography, and the like. This strategy, which has continued on in the Switch 2 generation, appears to have paid off, with the company’s streamlined approach resulting in speedy OS navigation, the prioritization of gaming experiences, and massive sales numbers.

That being said, the fact of the matter is that both the Switch and the Switch 2 make for excellent streaming devices, with their large tablet-sized display panels, their stereo speakers, and their built-in kickstands. The original Switch, for better or worse, offered a comparatively slim selection of streaming services when compared to other modern mobile gadgets, with YouTube being by far the most prominent option on the platform.

With the launch of the Switch 2 back in June of last year, I was disappointed to find that Google’s YouTube app was incompatible with the Switch 2, despite the console using a similar operating system and the same underlying computing architecture as its predecessor. I’m not sure why it’s taking so long for the app to make its way to the platform, but I’m more hopeful than ever that it’ll arrive on the Nintendo eShop in the not-too-distant future. Here’s hoping Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime Video, and Spotify jump on the hybrid console bandwagon sometime soon, too.
