EP 3102 This episode breaks down how senior professionals can attract the right opportunities through intentional, value-driven networking. I get into the practical habits that make you visible, credible, and memorable in the executive marketplace. If you’re ready to move beyond random conversations and start generating real momentum in your career, this will point you in the right direction.
LinkedIn’s #opentowork Post
All right, let’s get right into it. Today, we’re going to talk about a career hack that completely flips the old rules of networking on their head. Seriously, we’re talking about a way, a much smarter way to get ahead by making amazing opportunities come directly to you.
I mean, does this sound familiar? You’re just so tired of the whole networking grind. You’re sending out cold emails that just vanish into the void, or you’re dragging yourself to these awkward networking events, making small talk, and it just leads absolutely nowhere. It’s frustrating, right? Well, there’s a much better way to play the game.
So it all comes down to this one crucial shift in your mindset. You’ve got the old way, chasing opportunities. That’s the push strategy.
It’s exhausting. But then there’s the new way, attracting opportunities. This is a pull strategy where all of a sudden, warm leads and incredible offers start landing in your lap.
So let’s give this a name, right? We’re going to call it the attraction strategy. And look, this isn’t just some little trick. It’s a completely different way of thinking about your career and your professional visibility.
It’s about turning yourself into a magnet for the exact opportunities you want. Just take a second and actually picture this. What if instead of you hunting down contacts, you woke up in the morning, opened your laptop and saw amazing opportunities, just sitting in your inbox, in your LinkedIn DMs, people with really cool projects and reaching out to you, that’s the goal here.
Why So Many Interviews?
That’s the reality we’re aiming for. The official term for this whole approach, it’s called thought leadership networking. And the idea is actually super simple, but it’s incredibly powerful.
You just stop telling people you’re an expert and you start showing them in public. And when you do that, the right opportunities just naturally find their way to you. Okay.
So you’re probably thinking this sounds great, but how in the world do I actually do it? Well, it’s all about finding your stage. You need to find platforms, you know, places where you can put your knowledge and your skills on display for the right people to see. And look, you have options.
You don’t have to be some kind of celebrity to find a stage. Think about speaking on an industry panel, or what about being a guest on a podcast in your niche? Companies are always looking for experts to lead webinars. And Hey, even your own alumni network is a fantastic place to start sharing what you know.
And maybe the best part of all this, you don’t have to aim for the biggest stage right out of the gate. The advice is super clear. Start small, start local, find a local meetup group, maybe an internal webinar, your own company, or a smaller podcast that’s just getting started.
Build your confidence, hone your message, and then you can branch out to the bigger stuff. So what starts to happen once you actually put yourself out there? Well, this is where the magic kicks in. The rewards start showing up and they build on each other over time.
What Recruiters Know That You Don’t: They Don’t Fill That Many Positions
This is where all that effort really begins to pay off big time. The ultimate goal, the whole point of this is to get to a place where you are seen as THE go-to person in your field. So when someone in your industry has a question or an opportunity, your name is one of the very first that pops into their head, and here is the absolute best part of this whole strategy.
You build this incredible reputation without ever having to pitch yourself. Your talk, your appearance on that panel or podcast, that is the pitch. It demonstrates your value.
It doesn’t just talk about it. The networking benefits that come from this are just insane. First off, it gives you a totally natural, authentic reason to connect with everyone involved.
The organizers, the other panelists, even people in the audience. No more of those awkward, hey, let’s connect messages. And second, and this is huge, people start to know your name.
They recognize your voice. You’re basically building a warm relationship before you’ve even sent a single email. Okay, now let’s zoom out for a second and look at the long game here.
Cause this isn’t just about finding your next gig. This is about building a powerful, sustainable engine for your entire career. It’s something called the visibility flywheel.
So here’s how this flywheel gets spinning. Every time you share your expertise in public, you get more visible. That visibility attracts new, even better opportunities, maybe a speaking gig and a bigger conference.
And when you take that opportunity, your visibility goes up again, which then attracts even bigger and better opportunities, it’s this powerful, self-reinforcing cycle of success. And you can really see how this just compounds over time. The effort you put in during year one, that doesn’t just fade away.
No, it builds the foundation for year two, which then launches you into year three. Your career momentum can literally grow exponentially. And if you’re thinking about the future, get this, this strategy is basically future-proof.
As AI and search tools get smarter, they’re going to get even better at finding and recommending the real experts. So the more visible you are, the more technology itself will actually help amplify your voice. It’s an investment that will pay off for years and years.
So all of this brings us to one final, really important question. This isn’t just some interesting theory. It’s a real, actionable plan.
The only thing left to figure out is where are you going to find your first stage?
