When it comes to buzzy horror films, I have to admit I was blindsided by Hokum, the new film from director Damien McCarthy (Oddity, Caveat) starring Adam Scott, which is out in theaters this weekend. The film follows a novelist named Ohm who takes a somber journey to a remote inn in rural Ireland to scatter the ashes of his late parents. However, after a shocking near-death incident on his first night in the hotel, Ohm begins a dark investigation that leads to stunning revelations about his own past that are too terrifying to turn away from.
Though I hadn’t heard much about this film in the weeks prior to its release, reviews have been exceptionally glowing, with the film notching an 85% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Reviewers have praised the dark, atmospheric nature of the film, with many noting that some of the film’s scares can be quite intense. In a recent interview, star Adam Scott even revealed that he heard a story about someone at a screening who had a very specific physical reaction to one of the film’s more shocking moments.
With so much buzz around this film (and especially how scary it is) if you’re one of many who would rather watch it at home then in the theater, the good news is the film is already available to pre-purchase on several streaming services, and will also be available on Hulu in the near future.

Pre-orders for Hokum are already available on several major platforms
Currently the release date is TBD, but June seems likely
While we don’t have a specific at-home streaming date yet, Hokum is now available to pre-order digitally on several major platforms, including Apple TV and Fandango at Home for $20.
Currently, none of these pre-order pages contain a release date, but horror movies typically have a short theatrical exclusivity window, which means an early-to-mid June streaming premiere is likely for this film.

When will Hokum be free to stream on Hulu?
A late summer debut is likely
If you’re a Hulu subscriber, Hokum will also be able to stream free on the service, likely in a few months. This is thanks to a deal Neon has with Disney that puts this specific distributor’s films on Hulu following an unspecified VOD platform exclusivity window. Currently, we’d expect this to mean a late summer debut for Hokum for Hulu subscribers, just in time for the start of the spooky season this fall.
