A dispute has erupted in an exclusive Brisbane suburb dubbed ‘Millionaire’s Row’ as neighbours fight over a pontoon on a well-known river.

Developer Cameron Massie’s company initially sought approval for a 19.35m pontoon off his $5.9million riverside home at New Farm.

The pontoon would allow him to moor his 20m boat on the Brisbane River, despite the nearby ferry terminal. 

The proposal was later reduced to 16m when the plan was submitted to the State Assessment and Referral Agency.

Mr Massie’s neighbour, real estate agent Theresa Fitzgerald, objected to the pontoon, arguing it was too large and could reduce her ability to use her own.

She had her own 9.6m pontoon approved by Brisbane City Council in 2008.

New Farm is known as ‘Millionaire’s Row’ and includes a stretch of waterside properties along Brisbane River where the median house price is $3.5million.

Ms Fitzgerald also argued her property has more river frontage than Mr Massie’s.

The neighbours live on ‘Millionaire’s Row’ along the Brisbane River in trendy New Farm 

‘The subject site has river frontage that is 1.3m less than my property, yet proposes a pontoon that is approximately 9.75m longer,’ Ms Fitzgerald wrote to the council.   

‘This represents a structure that is effectively double the scale that would be reasonably expected for a site of this size and frontage.’

But Mr Massie’s company argued the larger pontoon was needed for his boat. 

‘This sized vessel will require the longer length pontoon to ensure mooring lines are able to hold the vessel in place to withstand the effects of the ferry action,’ an assessment report by Project Urban stated.

‘Given the proximity of the location to the ferry terminal, wave action from the approaching and departing ferry is significant and frequent.

‘The proposed pontoon and vessel will be positioned within the navigation corridor,’ the report said.

Another neighbour in the vicinity has a pontoon measuring 21.05m, much longer than Mr Massie’s original proposal. 

The owners, socialite Brooke George and her developer husband Patrick George, have lived at the property for nine years and rebuilt the home in 2021.

The State Assessment and Referral Agency approved Mr Massie’s proposal on August 27, meaning Brisbane City Council will now decide the development application.

The Daily Mail has approached Mr Massie and Ms Fitzgerald for comment, who gave no response at the time of publishing.
