A young boy has died after being hit by a school bus in New Jersey.

At around 3:40 p.m. local time on Friday, May 8, police officers responded to reports of a “pedestrian motor vehicle crash involving a juvenile and a school bus,” said the Greenwich Township Police Department in a news release.

Upon arrival, officers joined residents in providing emergency medical care to the juvenile before they turned him over to the Gloucester County Emergency Medical Services. While the child was transported to Cooper Hospital for treatment, he “tragically succumbed to his injuries” soon after.

The boy, who has not been publicly identified, was 7 years old, according to ABC 6.

The fatal crash is believed to have occurred just moments after the boy got off the school bus, NBC 10 reported, citing police.

“I heard the police and ambulance and all that stuff,” a neighbor told ABC 6. “I thought it was down the street. Then I come and look out here and, next thing you know, the whole neighborhood's crawling with red lights and blue lights.”

“I see the kid walking up, down the street every day, either going to school or coming from school — or to the bus stop, rather,” he continued. “It's tragic, it's devastating for the family. May God rest his soul.”

Ring camera footage obtained by the outlet shows a woman frantically knocking on a neighbor's door and begging for help moments after the child was struck. In the background, the bus is stopped in the road as residents rush to render aid to the child. 

"I saw a bunch of people hovering around the kid," another witness told NBC 10. "Two people, one was a nurse, actually both were nurses, did CPR on him."

A representative of the Clonmell Methodist Church announced that the church will be opening on Saturday “for any residents affected by this tragedy,” per the police news release. The Greenwich Township School District will also be making counseling available to students upon their return on Monday. 

A representative from the Greenwich Township School District and the Greenwich Township Police Department did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment.
