Bold Four-Story Cultural Complex : Grand Fendika Cultural Center

The Grand Fendika Cultural Center is a new cultural hub by Carlo Ratti Associati, honoring Ethiopia’s Fendika Cultural Center in Addis Ababa’s Kazanchis neighborhood. Designed after the historic venue was demolished in late 2024, the four-story complex reconnects community and creativity. A welcoming open-air stage sits atop a gently sloping stair-ramp, linking street-level courtyard performances to artist studios, rehearsal spaces, classrooms, archives, a café, and residences in one continuous, open form.

More than a venue, the project revives a vital cultural legacy in collaboration with local artists and Fendika’s community leadership. The design encourages movement and inclusivity, inviting passersby to see inside and take part. Blending hotel amenities with public art spaces, the center serves as both a meeting place and a creative anchor, embodying the idea that architecture thrives when it is open, layered, and deeply connected to everyday life.
