Arthur Fery vs Alexander Zverev – Wimbledon semi-final LIVE: British wildcard on brink of defeat as second seed closes in on dominant straight sets victory on Centre Court

Follow Daily Mail Sport’s live coverage of the Wimbledon semi-final as Arthur Fery’s fairytale continues against French Open champion Alexander Zverev.

‘That serve is sickeningly good’,’ John McEnroe has just said of Zverev. And, he’s right, it really is.

The German wins another service game 40-0 to go within a game of a place in the final.

Fery’s shot of the day! Arthur Fery (0) 3-4 (2) Alexander Zverev

He’s staring down the barrel at defeat here, but Arthur Fery isn’t going down without a fight.

Zverev is 40-30 up and at the net, he volleys to the corner of the court and it looks as though Fery is done, but the Brit swings an arm at it and directs the ball past Zverev to win the point. He then goes on to fire a first serve past Zverev to win the game.

The Wimbledon crowd loved that and, not gonna’ lie, I did too.

Fery overawed by the occasion

Former Australian tennis player Todd Woodbridge just said on the BBC:

Don’t get lost in the emotion of it all. He’s [Fery] looked really frantic at times.

Fery is broken! Arthur Fery (0) 2-3 (3) Alexander Zverev

And that, folks, could be that.

Fery is broken for the first time in this third set – and it’s a tremendous forehand from Zverev which seals it for the German.

It’s not the first time the No 2 seed has pulled off such a shot today.

He’s in the far left corner of the court, and unleashes a cross-court sizzler out of the reach of his 5ft 9in opponent. Even the Brit-supporting Wimbledon crowd rise to their feet.

That was just sumptuous tennis.

Fery looks to be wilting

Fery looks to be struggling in the south-west London sunshine at the minute, despite the fact he’s yet to be broken in this set.

The significant height distance between the pair is really stark. One of Zverev’s second serves in that last game bounced almost over Fery’s head.

Arthur Fery (0) 2-2 (2) Alexander Zverev

Fery is doing well to hold his own serve, but the Brit just simply cannot complete when the ball is in Zverev’s hand – whether that’s on his first, or second, serve.

It gives Zverev an instant advantage and the German almost always capitalises on it.

Shock, horror, he wins the game 40-15 with an ace.

Jamie Murray: ‘Zverev is seriously impressive’

Indeed he is, Jamie. The Scotsman said:

It’s been some seriously impressive ball striking from Zverev. He’s using his forehand so well. But, Fery has been in difficult moments across the tournament. Every match he’s played he’s had a hole to get out of and he’s shown his resilience.

Bish, bash, bosh. I barely blinked there and Zverev has won his service game. And the German did so without response.

Fery is finding it really difficult to cope with the German’s power and can’t get a foothold in many of the rallies.

Fery does well there to hold serve in the first game of the second set.

The winning point is met by loud cheers from the crowd, including from Martin Freeman, who was filmed whistling from the Royal Box.

This, though, is where it really matters with Zverev now serving.

The German’s second serve is clocked at 120mph. That’s quicker than Fery’s first. My, oh my.

Jamie Murray: ‘Fery needs to keep calm’

Seven-time Grand Slam champion Jamie Murray on how Fery can mentally reset ahead of the third set:

My message would be to keep calm, understand the situation. It’s been a difficult 45 minutes but he’s got to figure out a way to get Zverev off his forehand. Take it game by game, point by point. Fery needs to hang in there and work his way back into the match.

Arthur Fery (0) 0-0 (2) Alexander Zverev

Arthur Fery gets the third – and most likely the final – set underway.

The Fery is sinking! Brit loses second set

It’s two sets to love for Zverev, and it’s looking like this one could be over by 4pm.

Fery has shown tremendous fight to stay in the game, but the gulf between the two players is stark.

Zverev boasts more power, athleticism and experience – and it’s showing.

Fery will need to conjure up something really special to come back from this.

Zverev wins the second set 6-2.
