Summer has always been synonymous with big blockbuster action thrillers, at least in theaters. But at home, Apple TV is bringing all of that adrenaline to the small screen. Apple’s streaming service is no stranger to stellar thrillers or action-packed miniseries. The platform boasts shows like the military action series, Echo 3, or the dicey spy thriller starring Gary Oldman, Slow Horses. Now, a new series, Lucky, based on Marissa Stapley’s novel of the same name is available for action-thriller enthusiasts.
The series stars Anya Taylor-Joy in the lead role as Lucky Armstrong, a con artist who’s on the lam after a botched multimillion-dollar heist places a target on her back. The showrunner, Jonathan Topper, the creative behind other hit Apple TV series like See and Your Friends & Neighbors leads as series creator and co-showrunner alongside Cassie Pappas (Silo, Griselda). Both showrunners, Taylor-Joy herself, producer Lauren Neustadter, and actress Reese Witherspoon are backing the series as executive producers. With this level of talent and star power behind the series, there is no doubt as to why it’s one of the most anticipated offerings on Apple TV.

Apple TV+ is a global streaming service which offers on-demand access to a growing list of exclusive content, including Severance, Ted Lasso, Slow Horses, and much more.
Lucky is equal parts action, thriller, and mystery
It’s a layered story that is sure to keep raising the stakes
Lucky focuses on a woman who is torn between the law, a violent gangster, and her family with a $10 million heist gone wrong at the very center of it all. While the titular character’s name seems ironic, it could prove useful if she has any prayer of keeping her head above water. The mystery at the center of this premise is that Lucky unluckily awakens post-heist to find that both the money and her husband have vanished. The answer to this deepening mystery isn’t a simple one, and it’s a truth that Lucky must uncover.
But make no mistake, the mystery elements are juxtaposed with throttled action sequences that might give Bruce Willis in his prime a run for his money. The promotional materials for Lucky depict a grandiose narrative littered with high-speed pursuits, gunfights, and all manner of action-genre intensity. Anya Taylor-Joy is placed in the captain’s chair as a desperate woman not to be trifled with. Annette Bening (American Beauty, The Kids Are All Right) jumps from her villainous role in Dutton Ranch over to one of the primary antagonists in Lucky. Never underestimate Bening’s ability to be absolutely menacing on screen. The cast of Lucky also includes Timothy Olyphant (Justified, Alien: Earth) and Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor (King Richard, The Help). Undoubtedly, all of these elements will coalesce into an incredible ride.
How can you watch Lucky?
The series premiered on Apple TV+ on July 15th
To enjoy Anya Taylor-Joy’s latest and greatest, you’ll have to have an Apple TV subscription. You can nab a subscription for $12.99/month. Or, if you are either already subscribed to Peacock or intend to do so, you can bundle the two services for only $14.99/month. However, if you don’t want to throw your hard-earned dollars behind the service just yet and would like a taste, Apple TV+ does offer a 7-day free trial. Just be sure to cancel before your 7 days are up if you don’t plan to keep the service.
The series premiered on July 15th with its first two episodes. So, if you are going the route of the 7-day free trial, there are already episodes available that could make or break your decision to stick with the service. There will be a total of 7 episodes in the season. The remaining episodes will release weekly on Wednesdays until the finale finally drops on August 19th. Each episode appears to be 45–50 minutes long. With streaming, of course, there are no time constraints. So, the later episodes could always differ in length.
If you like Lucky, Apple TV has other options you may enjoy
There are several great thrillers available on Apple TV
Fans of Anya Taylor-Joy don’t have to look very far for another intriguing thriller from the same actress. The film, The Gorge, is available on Apple TV+ and stars Taylor-Joy and Miles Teller (Top Gun: Maverick, Whiplash) in the leading roles. They play the roles of two highly trained operatives posted at guard towers on either side of a mysterious gorge that acts as a boundary between their countries. The secrecy regarding their postings gets the better of them, and they ultimately decide to investigate.
There are a handful of series that also sit squarely in the “thriller” genre and could help you spend your 7-day free trial well. The modern-noir series Sugar returned with season 2 recently. John Sugar is tackling a new case. Dark Matter, starring Joel Edgerton (Warrior, Loving), follows a physicist who inadvertently discovers a version of his own life in a different reality. Currently, Silo season 3 is airing. The series stars Rebecca Ferguson (Dune, Doctor Sleep) as an engineer in a dystopian underground community that stretches 144 levels underground. This series is chock-full of secrets, twists, and turns. At the end of the day, there is plenty of high-quality streaming available on Apple TV that you can enjoy during the breaks in between Lucky episodes.
