3 of fall’s most buzzed-about shows are getting a sneak peek this week ‣ Diverse Daily

Streaming services continue to make big inroads on the film festival circuits, especially as these high-profile events now start to feature prestige TV shows. The Toronto International Film Festival is nearing, and this year’s lineup includes a Primetime program showcasing a selection of new and returning shows that will eventually head to streaming platforms.

Both Amazon and Peacock will feature in this program, each with a much-anticipated prestige horror show that will drop on their respective streaming services soon after. Here are all the titles you need to know and when you can watch at home.

Mike Flanagan returns with a Carrie remake

The horror creator moves to Prime Video after Netflix

This is perhaps the most anticipated of the fall shows, especially for genre fans. Mike Flanagan, having jumped from Netflix to Prime, will debut his take on the classic Stephen King story of Carrie. The horror specialist entranced fans with The Haunting of Hill House and The Haunting of Bly Manor, among others, showing his ability to not only scare audiences, but delve into topics such as love, grief, and identity to create layered, compelling stories.

Carrie is a more well-known story, so it will be interesting to see how Flanagan adds new life and nuances to this story. TIFF will feature the first two episodes of Carrie. If you can’t make the festival, you can catch the first episode on Prime Video on October 7.

American Hostage offers real-life thrills on MGM+

The Jon Hamm-led series is based on a true story

Jon Hamm in MGM+ series American Hostage

This anthology series based on a true story, inspired by the podcast of the same name, stars Jon Hamm as a radio host who receives an interview request from a bank robber. The incident took place in Indianapolis in 1977, where a town’s trusted voice confronts a desperate man stuck in a stand-off. Along with Hamm, American Hostage stars Giovanni Ribisi, Mireille Enos, and William Jackson Harper.

This production will actually drop on MGM+, a perhaps lesser known streaming service under the umbrella of Prime Video. It’s not an ideal situation for consumers, and it’s likely the highest profile title on the channel, which I imagine is why Amazon put it there. It is hoping the title attract subscribers. Regardless, you can check out this streaming series on September 20 if you can’t make it to the film festival.

Friday the 13th prequel series comes to Peacock

Another anticipated show of the horror variety debuting at TIFF this year is Crystal Lake, a prequel series about genre’s most infamous summer camp. The series takes places before the events of Friday the 13th, with Linda Cardellini playing Pamela Vorhees as the single mother whose life spirals following the drowning of her young son.

Filmmakers and creatives have returned to this series time and again over the years, with varying results. There’s always the risk of offering too much story around a popular tale, going back to the well one too many times. The premise and cast seem entertaining enough; whether the results will stick is another matter. Crystal Lake will debut on Peacock on October 15.
