However, if you’ve been eagerly awaiting Apple’s next streaming box, there’s finally some encouraging news about its possible release.
A new Apple TV 4K could launch this fall
The hardware is reportedly complete, and Apple is testing it internally
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple reportedly has the new Apple TV 4K “nearly ready to go.” Gurman says the hardware itself has been finished “for months” and is currently being tested internally by employees at Apple’s headquarters in Cupertino, California.
As for why it’s been held up for so long, it all comes down to one key factor: Siri. Earlier this year, Gurman reported that the primary reason the new Apple TV 4K has been delayed is that Apple wants to use the device to showcase Siri’s new features, which is why the company reportedly plans to launch it “in tandem with the new Siri and Apple Intelligence updates.”
That revamped version of Siri is now expected to finally arrive this fall alongside iOS 27, after nearly a year and a half of delays. And with the new Siri seemingly right around the corner, there’s a good chance the next Apple TV 4K won’t be far behind, especially if it’s already “nearly ready to go.” Hopefully, that means we should see it launch this fall, possibly in September with the new iPhones or in October.
The wait is shaping up to be worth it
The new Apple TV 4K could feature the A17 Pro chip
If you’ve been waiting forever to upgrade to the new Apple TV 4K, as I have, don’t worry, because the wait sure does seem like it’ll be worth it.
For months now, rumors have suggested the new Apple TV 4K will feature an upgraded A17 Pro chip, the same processor that debuted in the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max back in 2023. Considering how fast the iPhone 15 Pro still feels even three years later, having that kind of hardware inside Apple’s next streaming box could be a game-changer. It would easily make the new Apple TV 4K one of the fastest streaming devices on the market, if not the fastest. The current third-gen Apple TV 4K has an A15 Bionic chipset, so a jump to the A17 Pro makes sense.
And with the device expected to support the new Siri and Apple Intelligence features, that extra performance headroom will likely be more important than ever.
Additionally, the upcoming Apple TV 4K is rumored to feature Apple’s new N1 networking chip, which is designed to support Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread. The N1 chip was developed in-house by Apple and first debuted in the iPhone 17 series and the iPhone Air. The current third-gen Apple TV 4K supports Wi-Fi 6, so the jump to Wi-Fi 7 should be a welcome upgrade for faster wireless speeds and better overall connectivity.
The biggest unknowns right now are the price and whether Apple will once again offer two versions like it did with the current generation…
As for the design, the new Apple TV 4K is expected to look fairly similar to the current model, with the same compact square design, rounded edges, and black plastic finish. Gurman reports that the remote’s design could change, though it’s unknown how substantial that would be.
The biggest unknowns right now are the price and whether Apple will once again offer two versions like it did with the current generation: a 64GB model and a higher-end 128GB version with Gigabit Ethernet. Personally, I’d love to see Gigabit Ethernet included on the base model this time around, but we’ll have to wait and see what Apple decides to do there.
With the new Apple TV 4K reportedly “nearly ready to go,” hopefully, it will launch this fall once the new Siri finally arrives, so fingers crossed there are only a few more months left to wait.
