Skinny jeans used to rule the streets, but now a new cut is taking over our spring denim mood board — and celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow, Jackie Tohn, Cameron Diaz, and others have co-signed it.

Cigarette jeans (a loose cousin to skinny denim) are a “modern reimagining” of the fitted pants that’s “slim, but not overly tight,” New York City-based stylist Karen Zapp tells PEOPLE. It’s not just a spring trend either, as editorial stylist Megan Swansen adds that cigarette jeans in light washes will “carry you… all the way through summer.”

“Skinny jeans have taken a backseat,” says Chelsea Volpe, a stylist and creative director. Instead, she says the focus is on “clean, tailored lines” that cigarette jeans offer. Diaz was seen in a black pair similar to this one while on set for her upcoming rom-com The Sham. It offers a more casual structure through its raw hem, and you can complete the look with ballet flats and a a slightly looser top for an “elevated feel,” notes stylist Debbie Hsieh. 

Democracy Ab Solution Straight-Leg Jeans

Jackie Tohn made her debut on the Amazon Prime series, The Boys, in a pair of dark wash cigarette jeans, much like this style from Democracy. Jenni Lee, a celebrity and personal stylist who has previously worked with Scarlett Johansson and Greta Gerwig, considers this cut  “universally flattering.”For spring, she recommends throwing on a white T-shirt then cycling through sneakers, sandals, heels, loafers, ballet flats, and boots. She adds you should also experiment how you wear the jeans — whether you “cuff 'em, roll them, tuck them in, belt them, [or] pull them down on the hips.”

Lee Legendary Slim-Straight Jeans

Hsieh labels slim straight-leg jeans one of the “standout” styles of the season, especially if you want to look “modern and polished.” Paltrow’s take on the trend has the components Volpe recommends to avoid looking “outdated,” such as a tailored jacket and boots (but for warmer months, you can swap for loafers or ballet flats).
