LG TVs come with plenty of free features you’d expect from a smart TV nowadays. You can download a wide selection of streaming apps, access over 400 free live TV channels through LG Channels, and use Home Hub to control and monitor smart home devices like lights, thermostats, and cameras. There are also features like Apple AirPlay and Google Cast, making it easy to cast content from your phone or tablet right to your TV.
But now, LG is working on bringing a brand-new free feature to its TVs that will help solve one of the biggest dilemmas that comes up during movie nights and game days: deciding what to order to eat.
SoundHound AI has recently announced a strategic partnership with LG to bring restaurant ordering to LG smart TVs right across the US. So, if you’ve ever dreamed of ordering dinner on your TV, it will soon become reality.
The rollout is reportedly expected to start in December, with approximately 20 million LG TVs in the US set to receive the feature (via Digital Trends). In a press release, SoundHound, an American artificial intelligence company that provides agentic AI services to restaurants and other industries, says it will initially focus on bringing restaurant ordering to LG TVs before expanding to other merchants.
How will this work exactly?
Ordering food on your LG TV should feel pretty familiar
If you’re curious how this will work, once the feature rolls out through a free webOS software update, you’ll be able to choose from nearby restaurants, browse their menus, pick what you want to eat, and pay for everything right on your TV. It’ll work the same way as ordering food through an app like Uber Eats or DoorDash.
You’ll even be able to order food in a picture-in-picture window, so if you’re watching an intense game and don’t want to miss any of the action, you can still place your order without looking away.
What’s unclear right now is how many restaurants will actually be participating in this when it launches on LG TVs. SoundHound says it already works with over 15,000 restaurants in the US, including big food chains like Jersey Mike’s, Five Guys, and White Castle, so there could be plenty of options. Restaurants also don’t need to buy new hardware for this food-ordering system to work either, since it’s already connected to existing point-of-sale (POS) systems that many of them already use for takeout orders.
…I’m a little wary of this whole thing because ordering food through a TV sounds like it could be pretty clunky.
Personally, I’ve never wanted to order food on my TV before, but I can see how it could come in handy when you’re hosting friends and family and want everyone to browse the restaurant’s menu and pick something on the big screen. It also means you won’t have to pass your phone around to everyone who wants to order something. You can just pass the remote instead.
That said, I’m a little wary of this whole thing because ordering food through a TV sounds like it could be pretty clunky, especially when it’s already so easy to order from your phone, particularly if you’re only ordering for one or two people. However, I’m still curious to see how this could eventually expand beyond restaurants to other merchants, such as letting you order groceries, games, and home essentials directly from your TV.
This restaurant ordering feature is reportedly expected to roll out on LG smart TVs in the US in December, so there isn’t much of a wait to see how it pans out.
