Your LG TV is about to lose an app it never really needed

Nowadays, smart TVs come preloaded with a wide range of streaming apps, including the usual suspects like Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, and Apple TV. However, some TVs also come with apps that might leave users scratching their heads, wondering why they’re there in the first place. For LG TV owners, one such app is Microsoft Copilot.

Last December, following a webOS update, LG suddenly began automatically installing a Microsoft Copilot app shortcut on all its smart TVs. The move sparked swift backlash from users who didn’t want an AI app on their TVs, especially since the shortcut initially couldn’t be uninstalled and could only be hidden. LG later responded to the controversy with a statement saying it “respects consumer choice,” then rolled out another webOS update that finally let users remove Copilot from their TVs.

Now, not even a year later, Microsoft has decided to end Copilot support on smart TVs altogether, with LG confirming the news in a message sent to affected smart TV owners. I received this message on my LG C5 TV on October 28:

“We would like to inform you that Microsoft has recently decided to end support for Copilot functionality on all TVs, including the Copilot-enabled feature available on our LG TVs. As a result, the Copilot-enabled feature on your TV is no longer available and may stop functioning shortly.”

Microsoft is calling it quits with Copilot on TVs

Did anyone want Copilot on their TV to begin with?

webOS message about Microsoft Copilot support ending.

Given the big AI push we’ve seen over the past couple of years, I have to admit I was a little surprised to see Microsoft give up on bringing more Copilot features to smart TVs. However, given the company’s shift this year toward focusing on Copilot for productivity and business use, I can see why it would make sense to abandon TVs. Plus, many smart TVs already have their own AI assistants, including Gemini on Google TV, Alexa+ on Fire TV, and the upcoming Siri AI on Apple TV, which, frankly, make Copilot feel pretty irrelevant on TVs.

Copilot on smart TVs offered many of the same features as other AI assistants, including the ability to recommend shows and movies, recap shows, and find movies starring a particular actor. However, one major roadblock quickly became apparent: not many people wanted Copilot on their TVs in the first place. Just look at the backlash it received when it first started appearing on LG and Samsung smart TVs last year.

Personally, when Copilot showed up out of the blue on my LG TV last year, I wasn’t thrilled about having an AI app forcibly installed on my TV, and I’m certainly not upset to see it go. For once, I think this is a situation where a smart TV losing support for an app is actually for the better.

LG TV delete Copilot shortcut.

According to the message LG sent to its TV owners, Microsoft hasn’t set an exact date for when Copilot support will end, only saying that it’s “scheduled for discontinuation during 2026.” That means it will likely disappear sometime in November or December.

However, if you’d rather get rid of Copilot on your LG TV now, you can uninstall it by heading to your TV’s home screen, navigating to Copilot in the list of apps, and pressing and holding the select button on your remote. A screen will pop up with two options: hide the app (the eyeball icon) or delete it (the trash can icon), as shown in the image above. Select the delete option and confirm your choice, and Copilot will be gone from your TV.
