World Cup commentator goes viral after making embarrassing on-air mistake trying to identify A-lister

A British TV commentator has gone viral after making an embarrassing on-air blunder while trying to identify an A-list celebrity during the World Cup final.

The cringeworthy moment occurred during Sunday’s showdown between Spain and Argentina at MetLife Stadium – and was quickly picked up on by viewers watching the BBC’s coverage at home.

As broadcast cameras cut to the VIP boxes during the first half, the coverage focused on the high-profile stars taking in the showpiece event in New Jersey.

The camera panned directly to multi-award-winning musician Pharrell Williams, who was sitting in the stands wearing dark sunglasses as he watched the action unfold.

However, BBC commentator Guy Mowbray completely failed to recognize the ‘Happy’ hitmaker, instead telling millions of viewers that they were looking at a completely different music star.

‘I think that’s AKA Rocky, or A$AP Rocky, sorry,’ the commentator stated.

Social media users were quick to clip the live mistake, with the footage instantly racking up hundreds of thousands of views online as fans widely mocked the failure.

‘Never heard someone be so wrong yet say it with so much confidence,’ one viewer wrote on X in direct response to a clip of the embarrassing moment.

‘Sometimes, it’s best to say nothing at all,’ another wrote about the incident.

‘Not sure what’s funnier. Guy Mowbray calling ASAP Rocky ‘AKA’, or the fact that he was actually looking at Pharrell Williams,’ one user joked.

However, some fans noted that A$AP Rocky – and partner Rihanna – were in fact seated just in front of Williams, explaining the commentator’s mistake – given he was likely given a list of attendees and their respective seats in the stadium.

Williams and Rocky weren’t the only stars in attendance on the day, with a plethora of notable names – including President Donald Trump – making the trip to New Jersey.

Trump and his wife Melania were seen cozying up to big names, including FIFA President Gianni Infantino, Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney, and Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum.

Trump also shook hands with Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez as Infantino stood beside them.

Spain’s Queen Letizia and King Felipe VI also greeted the president. Javier Milei, the president of Argentina, is watching the game from home due to ‘superstition,’ The New York Times reported.

Meanwhile, an array of actors, singers and fashion icons were also spotted at the match, and the stars certainly pulled out all the stops when it came to their outfits.

Ivanka Trump and Tiffany Trump looked chic as they headed to the World Cup final on Sunday.

Ivanka opted for a striped haltered gown that left her toned shoulders on full display, while Tiffany donned a tan button-down collared dress.

Kylie Jenner flaunted her curves at the sporting event in a low-cut black long-sleeve top, which she paired with some simple black jeans.

She looked loved-up in the stands with her boyfriend, Timothee Chalamet, who opted for a blue Adidas top and black trousers.
