What Kim Kardashian’s Grandma MJ Told Her During Kris Humphries Divorce

After Kim Kardashian ignored her cold feet, she got some important advice about listening to her gut.

While detailing her brief marriage to Kris Humphries to journalist Jonathan Van Meter for his book Citizen Kim: The Woman Who Created the Future, Kardashian revealed it was her late grandmother Mary Jo “MJ” Shannon who gave her the nudge she needed towards ending her union.

“My grandmom was like, ‘Listen. My parents saved up all their money so I could have a big wedding because I thought I was in love,’” Kardashian recalled of Shannon’s advice. “‘About a month or two in, I realized I’d made a terrible decision and I was so embarrassed. It was in the town paper! I just wasted everyone’s time and money and I was mortified.’”

Despite worrying that her parents would never speak to her again, Shannon, who died in July at 91, told Kardashian she was able to go through with her own split but just focusing on the fact she “knew” she had to get a divorce.

“And she said to me,” the SKIMS founder explained, “‘You have to be happy. You have to be.’”
