What Is Netflix’s New ‘SCTV’ Documentary About? The Story Behind Canada’s Iconic Comedy Series

Martin Short, Eugene Levy, Catherine O’Hara, and Rick Moranis are among the comedy greats whose careers intersected with SCTV, the Canadian sketch comedy institution that helped shape television humor. Running through the late 1970s and early 1980s, the series developed a cult following with its eccentric characters, unconventional sketches, and fearless approach to parody.

Now, Netflix is bringing the surviving members of this comedy family together to revisit the show that helped launch a generation of performers. But what exactly made SCTV such a landmark, and what stories does the new documentary bring back into the spotlight?

Netflix’s SCTV documentary revisits the legacy of a comedy institution

Short for Second City Television, SCTV emerged from the Toronto branch of the Second City comedy troupe. The series ran intermittently between 1976 and 1984, building its reputation around an imaginary television station whose programming became a playground for satire. Rather than simply presenting disconnected sketches, the show created an entire fictional broadcasting universe, complete with absurd television personalities, spoof advertisements, movie parodies, and recurring characters.

Titled SCTV: The Greatest Show You’ve Never Heard Of, the documentary premiered on Netflix on October 30, 2026. Directed by Jason Hehir, the film chronicles the rise, fall, and enduring influence of Second City Television, bringing together intimate interviews with surviving cast members and an emotional reunion in Toronto.

The cast featured in the documentary, as per Netflix Tudum, includes Martin Short, Eugene Levy, Rick Moranis, Catherine O’Hara, and Joe Flaherty, whose contributions helped make the original series a comedy landmark. Executive produced by Jimmy Kimmel, Scott Lonker, and Hehir, the film looks beyond a nostalgic reunion to examine how an ambitious Canadian production developed its own comic language.

The platform has assembled a collection that explores different generations and approaches to making audiences laugh, from unconventional performers to boundary-pushing stand-up artists.

Netflix is celebrating comedy legends with three other October documentaries

The month began with Who Is Martin Mull? on October 7, a portrait of the late comedian, musician, writer, and painter. Directed by Bob Saget and Neil Berkeley, the documentary traces Mull’s unconventional career through his own words and recollections from friends, including Steve Martin, Tom Waits, and David Alan Grier.

On October 16, Judd Apatow’s Norm: The Tale of Norm Macdonald turned its attention to the late Saturday Night Live star. Drawing on archival footage, personal photographs, and rare home videos, the film allows Macdonald to tell his story through material he left behind.

The third documentary, Paralyzed by Hope: The Maria Bamford Story, arrived on October 23. Co-directed by Apatow and Berkeley, it follows Bamford from her childhood in Duluth, Minnesota, to her career in Los Angeles, examining how her mental health journey and family relationships informed her distinctive comedy. Together, these films create a broader celebration of performers who have challenged conventional ideas of humor, with SCTV bringing the spotlight back to the ensemble that helped change television comedy.

For viewers who grew up with these performers or discovered them through later projects, Netflix’s documentary offers an opportunity to revisit an important chapter in comedy history.
