Former UFC fighter Dustin Poirier is admitting he needs “help” following his arrest on Sunday, June 21, for public drunkenness.
“I’m at the point where I need some help, walking away from fighting hasn’t been easy on me and alcohol isn’t the answer,” Poirier, 37, wrote via his Instagram Story on Tuesday, June 23. “It has ruined my father’s life and I will not allow it to ruin mine, my family deserve me at 100 percent. I’m trying to do everything I can to get my mind right and take the right next steps.”
Poirier’s statement comes after he was removed from an airplane at Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson airport on Father’s Day. Police bodycam footage released by TMZ on Tuesday shows the aftermath of the incident, as the former fighter appeared to antagonize an officer at the gate.
“Let’s go, big dog. Let’s go, big dog. What’s up? Buncha hos. Let’s go. Let’s go,” Poirier said in the video. “F***in’ lying motherf****r. Yeah, pulled me off the plane, all my boys went to the f***in’ crib,” he said, per the footage. “Now, what the f***?”
The officer then calmly asked him, “Are you Dustin Poirier?”
“Man, f*** you, bro,” Poirier replied. “Man, f*** you and f*** her and f*** her. I’ll fight you right now.”
Poirier persisted, putting his bag down and continuing to provoke the officer, who said he was not interested in fighting the UFC champ. The officer also appeared to draw his taser, though he did not use it.
“Yeah, tell ’em. Tell ’em,” Poirier said as the officer asked for help over his radio. “Come on. ‘Cause it’s gonna be bad, It’s gonna be bad, my n****.”
He was eventually led away in handcuffs and was released on bond hours later, according to court documents viewed by Us Weekly.
Just weeks before his arrest, Poirier opened up about navigating life since last year’s retirement.
“Fighting has changed me forever, in good and bad ways,” he told Full Send MMA at UFC Freedom 250 on June 14. “It’s just trying to get into a groove of being a father, being home more, working on things outside of fighting. Things that I’ve put on the back burner for so many years.”
Poirier and his wife, Jolie LeBlanc, share daughter Parker, 9, and son Kingston, 7 months.
“I’ve really just gotta keep my mind busy,” he continued. “I’m a danger. I’ve said this before, people have heard me say this: I’m a danger if I don’t have anything circled on my calendar, if I’m not working towards something.”
Poirier added, “If I’m not trying to better myself or my family, I’m a danger to myself.”
