TV input lag is a major problem but there’s an easy solution


When it comes to a smart TV, most specs probably rank above input lag for the average shopper. 4K is taken for granted, but next up are size, HDR support, available ports, and refresh rate. I’d argue that the last of those is deeply underrated — it can make all the difference when it comes to smooth motion in movies and PC/console gaming.

Even further beneath the surface is input lag. To be fair, that’s often a combination of multiple factors, and trivial if you’re only interested in, say, sports or old Parks and Recreation episodes. Considering the devices many people are connecting to TVs, however, input lag can potentially have a huge impact.

What is input lag, and why does it matter?

The common definition of input lag is the delay between when your TV receives a video signal — from a console, Blu-ray player, or any other device — and when it actually appears onscreen. This is always rated in milliseconds (ms). It’s important to distinguish this from response time, which is how quickly individual pixels can change color.

Why is there any meaningful delay, you ask? The primary culprit is image processing. While this can do wonders to enhance video, especially if it’s from a lower-resolution source like a DVD player, your TV still has to buffer each frame, analyze it, and decide which effects to apply. The more enhancements you have active, the longer this takes. Now imagine this happening at least 24 times every second, sometimes as much as 60 or more.

Because modern processors are powerful, this delay is generally 40ms or less. That’s so small as to be largely irrelevant when you’re watching a movie or show. You might conceivably notice a lip sync delay if audio processing ends up faster, but it’s actually more likely that the audio will be slow, caused by Bluetooth or Wi-Fi issues. Friends don’t let friends pair a Bluetooth speaker to their TV.

Where things get dicey is with anything interactive, especially if input lag spikes over 100ms. That’s still only a fraction of a second — but it’s a noticeable fraction, and will make games and menus feel terrible, because there will always be a slight pause between when you hit a button (or stick) and when something actually happens onscreen. In the toughest games, such as Blasphemous or Elden Ring, that can make some segments absurdly difficult to finish, if not impossible.

Even 40ms can be a problem. It inevitably takes a moment for your brain to register what’s happening and react, and your controller will add a tiny amount of delay on top of that, as will the need to talk to servers if you’re playing online. This is why cloud gaming hasn’t made much of a dent, so far — everything has to be operating at peak efficiency to feel responsive, and that’s a tall ask when Google can’t always make YouTube respond quickly.

How to fight input lag

When it really counts, the standard shortcut is enabling Game Mode, which disables all of your TV’s image processing. The GPUs (graphics processors) in most PC and consoles will be light years ahead, making what your TV contributes redundant. Graphics are often upscaled, anti-aliased, and more before they ever reach an HDMI cable.

When you connect a PC or console via HDMI 2.1, Game Mode is enabled automatically via the appropriately named Auto Low-Latency Mode ( ALLM). It doesn’t matter whether you’re playing a game or not, for the record. As far as your TV is concerned, Windows 11 or macOS is as deserving of this treatment as the latest Assassin’s Creed title.

If you’re using HDMI 2.0, you’ll have to enable Game Mode manually, but you should avoid plugging anything more than a Blu-ray player into 2.0 regardless. Frankly, that standard is old. It limits 4K refresh rates to 60Hz, and you won’t be able to take advantage of other recent features like VRR (variable refresh rate) or lossless Dolby Atmos. In fact you can see how you’d still want that for Blu-ray, so it’s a disgrace that TV makers are still including 2.0 ports in 2026.

It’s best to avoid Game Mode for passive media, whether on disc or streaming — not that things will necessarily look ugly without processing. It’s just that you should prefer Filmmaker Mode instead. Functionally, this accomplishes the same thing, simply with the goal of staying true to what a creator intended. The one addition (outside HDR variants) is that it specifies a D65 white point, ensuring color temperature won’t be exaggerated in either direction.

If neither Game nor Filmmaker modes are keeping lag under control, there’s not much else you can do short of upgrading your TV. Try minimizing lag elsewhere — if you can keep your Wi-Fi humming, and switch to wired connections wherever possible, that may be enough. As a rule, visual input lag should be 10ms or less if you care about gaming.
