Trabzonspor have formally confirmed the signing of former Liverpool star Mohamed Salah on a lucrative two-year contract.

Salah had been greeted by Trabzonspor fans after touching down in Istanbul on Wednesday ahead of the move.

While Salah had been wearing Trabzonspor kit and addressed fans, Trabzonspor had repeated throughout that the club were in negotiations with the star.

Formalities have now been completed with Salah having undergone a medical and signed a two-year contract with the Turkish side.

‘Our new signing Mohamed Salah has signed the contract binding him to our club for two years, with the participation of our President Ertugrul Dogan,’ Trabzonspor stated on social media. 

Bloomberg, citing the Turkish media, reported that Salah will earn £14.5m each season at Trabzonspor, while he is said to have received a £4.2m signing on fee. 

Reports in Turkey have also claimed Salah will be entitled to 20 per cent of the profits from sales of his shirt.

Trabzonspor’s club shop confirmed on Wednesday that fans would be able to purchase shirts featuring Salah and his No 10.

Supporters of the Turkish club had been celebrating Salah’s arrival on Wednesday with crowds gathering at the Ataturk Airport in Istanbul.

The crowds greeted Salah, who was pictured in a Trabzonspor shirt having flown from the Greek island of Mykonos, where he had been on holiday, to Turkey.

Salah later travelled on to Trabzon, where more fans had massed by the airport.

‘I am very happy to be in this incredible atmosphere. I don’t recall ever seeing anything like this before,’ Salah said.

‘There are 25,000 people here —it’s incredible. I’ve never seen anything like it. 

‘I have achieved success everywhere I’ve been, and I want to achieve success at Trabzonspor as well.’

An official signing ceremony has also been scheduled at Trabzonspor’s Papara Park stadium this evening.

Turkish giants Besiktas had previously been in talks with Salah, but negotiations with the Egyptian star stalled last week. 

Salah’s future has been the subject of huge interest since the surprising decision was announced back in March that he would leave Liverpool one year into his two-year contract extension. 

Many anticipated that Saudi Arabia would be the most likely destination after Al-Ittihad made a £150million bid in summer 2023, but Trabzonspor have secured the signing of Salah, who fell out with former Liverpool boss Arne Slot last season.

The Turkish side finished third last season behind Fenerbahce and champions Galatasaray. 

Salah, who is the third-highest goalscorer in Reds history with 255, did not engage in talks with teams before the end of the season out of respect to the Merseyside club. 

His long-serving agent, Ramy Abbas, repeatedly insisted nothing had been decided and reaffirmed that stance during the World Cup. 

But since returning from the competition in the US, talks have accelerated with interested parties. 

Salah is renowned for his remarkable professionalism and will back himself to remain at a high level deep into his thirties. 

Salah was the star man as Slot’s side won the Premier League in Slot’s first season, the Egyptian’s second English title, but his level dipped last term with just ten goals compared to a staggering 34 when he spear-headed the 2024-25 title win.

Liverpool are yet to replace the player who was voted Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) Players’ Player of the Year three times at the club. 

With the start of the season fast approaching, Bradley Barcola of PSG remains the most likely high-profile attacking signing. 

But the 23-year-old, valued at £145million by his club, plays predominantly on the left and Jamie Carragher recently warned against buying him as a replacement for Salah.
