Tottenham clear the decks: Roberto De Zerbi completes first signing of his reign as Andy Robertson joins on a free transfer – and more could be on the way after relegation scare

Liverpool legend Andy Robertson has completed his move to Tottenham as a free agent and more signings are lined up as Tottenham bid to make a clean break from their relegation scrap.

Spurs survived in the Premier League by the skin of their teeth but are clearing the decks for a fresh start, with Robertson the first confirmed arrival.

Another free agent, Marcos Senesi, is expected to join as another free transfer following the expiry of his Bournemouth contract.

And Spurs are also making a play for Brighton centre-back Jan Paul van Hecke.

Scotland captain Robertson was close to a move to Spurs in January, but Liverpool were unable to bring back Kostas Tsimikas from his loan at Roma and pulled the plug on the switch.

Even though Tottenham have since changed manager, Roberto De Zerbi has given the green light for Robertson to join on July 1 after he made the decision to leave Anfield at the expiration of his contract this month after 378 appearances for Liverpool.

Robertson filmed a video of himself speaking about his excitement at the move, posted by Spurs on their social media.

He said: ‘Hi Tottenham fans, it’s me Andy Robertson here, as you can see I’m not in Glasgow, I’m in America just now preparing for the World Cup.

‘But I just wanted to send you a message to say I cannot wait to play for you guys, I cannot wait to meet you guys and I cannot wait to play in the stadium for the first time in front of you.

‘I’m already looking forward to next season. All the best and I’ll see you soon.’

De Zerbi said: ‘Andy is someone I’ve admired for a number of years and he will bring outstanding technical qualities, experience, leadership and mentality to our team.

‘He is a proven winner at the highest level over a long period and is someone who can be a big player for us, both on and off the pitch.

‘I can’t wait to start working with him and seeing the positive impact he will have on everyone around him.’

Daily Mail Sport’s Simon Jones on Thursday reported that Spurs have had an opening offer for Van Hecke rejected.

Brighton value the 25-year-old Netherlands international at close to £70million but he only has one year left on his contract.

Chelsea also hold an interest but Van Hecke is well-known to Roberto de Zerbi after he played under the Tottenham coach during his time in charge of Brighton.

That dynamic will attract the defender to the move but Spurs need to get closer to Brighton’s valuation.

There is an expectation that Cristian Romero will leave this summer and the club are clearly targeting reinforcements at centre-back.

It is shaping up to be a massive summer for the club, who are desperate to avoid the humiliating brush with relegation last season.

West Ham went down on the final day when Spurs managed to beat Everton to ensure their status as a Premier League side next season.
