When it comes to movies, I think fantasy is an underappreciated genre. Sure, I love action, sci-fi and superhero movies as much as the next person, but as a fan of fantasy books, classic films like The Princess Bride, and role-playing tabletop games, it puzzles me that modern fantasy films just aren’t that popular.
Though there have only been a handful of fantasy films released in the last decade, one of my most common recommendations is Three Thousand Years of Longing. Released in 2022, this film stars Tilda Swinton as an academic who accidentally makes contact with a djinn (played by Idris Elba), and, being a natural skeptic, invites him to prove his magical history to her by telling her stories about his long life.
The film is directed by George Miller (best known for the Mad Max series) and features a bold, colorful style that makes the film’s whimsical story leap off the screen. The film was lauded by critics upon release for its ambitious scope and wondrous visuals, and currently has a 71% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Unfortunately, Three Thousand Years of Longing was a box office failure, and only grossed just over $20 million, worldwide against a production budget of $60 million. And while you’d need a djinn of your own to go back in time and see this film on the big screen, you can at least check it out at home now for the low cost of nothing at all.
