This dystopian sci-fi classic is now free to stream ‣ Diverse Daily

I’m a sucker for dystopian movies and love watching interpretations of our future world and what we’ll need to do to survive. Some, like The Road, are bleak and thoughtful character studies, while others, like Mad Max: Fury Road, are action-packed extravaganzas. Children of Men is an underrated dystopian sci-fi classic that combines both elements. It has a thoughtful premise that asks difficult questions about humanity, and it also delivers tense action scenes with the characters in constant danger.

At its core, Children of Men asks a simple question. What would happen to the world if women lost the ability to make babies? It becomes unstable and is collapsing as people lose hope in the face of extinction. The UK has become a chaotic place with civil unrest, bombings, and an immigration crisis.

Children of Men is directed by Alfonso Cuarón. It features Clive Owen as Theo, a government bureaucrat who’s recruited by his estranged wife, the leader of a militant group, to escort a young woman to the coast. He gets the necessary papers from his cousin in the government and embarks on a journey to get the girl to safety. Things take a turn when the girl reveals she is pregnant and becomes the target for the militants who want the baby for their own ends.

Theo must protect the pregnant girl as they travel through hostile territory and evade the authorities with the militants on their trail. He needs to get her to the safety of The Human Project, a group of scientists just off the coast who’ll protect her. The two of them get caught up in the middle of a war and must find a way to protect the unborn child, who is Earth’s last hope of survival.

This movie is a harrowing tale that shows the best and worst of humanity. We experience the brutality of a broken world in which characters have become morally corrupt to survive. Others cling to their morality and never give up hope, no matter what the odds.

Children of Men earned 70.5 million at the box office on a $76 million budget and was considered a financial flop on release. It still received Oscar nominations for Best Adapted Screenplay, Cinematography, and Editing, and has become a cult classic among sci-fi fans. Most people remember this movie for its mind-blowing single-take action scenes, which immerse you in the gritty world.
