This 2026 box office flop won over critics and is now available to buy on streaming

The 2026 box office thus far has been quite the success story, with overall year-to-date ticket sales pacing higher than any other year post-COVID (per Axios), which is great news for the future of movies.

This is in large part thanks to films like Project Hail Mary, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, and most recently, Michael all exceeding expectations and experiencing long, often extended runs in theaters. And while these movies have captured plenty of attention for their record-breaking box office performance, not every movie released this year has been a success story.

Mortal Kombat II was released in theaters less than two weeks ago on May 8, 2026 in the US, and while it received mostly positive critical reviews (the film currently holds a 65% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes) the movie has been a flop in theaters, and will largely be gone from the multiplex in just a few days, thanks largely in part to The Mandalorian and Grogu monopolizing the vast majority of screens beginning May 21.

However, this movie may yet have a second life on streaming. If you were planning to see Mortal Kombat II but missed it in theaters, here’s how you can watch this movie at home.

Pre-orders for Mortal Kombat II are already available on several major platforms

Currently the release date is TBD, but it’s likely only a few weeks away

While we don’t have a specific at-home streaming date just yet, Mortal Kombat II is now available to pre-order digitally on several major platforms, including Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video, and Fandango at Home for $25. Though the film won’t be available at the vast majority of theaters after this week, if we assume that a 30-day theatrical exclusivity window is still in place (which is typical for other Warner Bros. releases), Mortal Kombat II should be available to rent or purchase in the first week of June.

For those who would like a physical and digital copy, pre-orders for the film on DVD, Blu-ray or 4K are also live on Amazon. Currently these physical releases have a release date of December 31. 2026. However, this is just a placeholder, and the actual release/shipping date for a physical copy of Mortal Kombat II will likely take place sometime this summer.

When will Mortal Kombat II be free to stream on HBO Max?

Before the end of the year

HBO Max on a TV.

Since it is distributed by Warner Bros., Mortal Kombat II will also be able to stream free for HBO Max subscribers before the end of the year. Currently, we’d expect this to mean a July or August debut for the film on the service, as it generally takes around 3 months for theatrical releases to stream free for subscribers on the service.
