‘The Trial of Alec Baldwin’ Takes a Closer Look at His Life After the ‘Rust’ Tragedy

Controversies are part and parcel of a celebrity’s life. From something as harmless as an oops moment on the red carpet to throwing jabs at one another, or, in Alec Baldwin’s case, accidentally shooting someone, celebrity scandals can run the gamut. Baldwin, nonetheless, is now telling his side of the story, giving audiences a closer look at his life after the controversy that turned his world upside down.

The Trial of Alec Baldwin explores Baldwin in the aftermath of the Rust shooting incident.

Alec Baldwin’s documentary, The Trial of Alec Baldwin, had its world premiere at DOC NYC on November 13, 2025. Ahead of its theatrical release across North America, a trailer has been recently released. The Beetlejuice actor was seen reflecting on the October 2021 incident and the fatal shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of Rust.

“People who watch this will see so much of me at my worst,” says Baldwin.

In the footage, Baldwin is seen being swarmed by photographers, one of whom shouts, “Alec, you k***** someone by accident. How do you feel?” as he asks them to back away.

Rory Kennedy, too, spoke to the challenge of giving Baldwin’s perspective its due without crossing the line into misplaced empathy or, worse, doing a disservice to Halyna Hutchins, whom the director calls the “victim.”

“This story is a tricky one because there is Halyna, who is the victim in this story and I, of course have enormous empathy for Halyna and her family given my own background and experience,” the documentary filmmaker told Variety ahead of the premiere.

Before getting to Baldwin’s side of the story, it is worth taking a closer look at the incident itself.

What happened on the sets of Rust

On October 21, 2021, Alec Baldwin was practicing drawing a revolver during a church-scene rehearsal. However, a live bullet got discharged from the prop revolver instead of a dummy, killing cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and injuring director Joel Souza.

Baldwin’s criminal trial began in July 2024, but the judge dismissed the case with prejudice just three days in. The charges were permanently dismissed after the judge found that prosecutors and police had concealed ammunition evidence from Baldwin’s defense. And now The Trial of Alec Baldwin will examine what happens when tragedy, celebrity, media scrutiny, and the legal system collide around a polarizing figure.
