The Super Mario Galaxy Movie may have been panned by critics with a poor 42% Rotten rating from Rotten Tomatoes, but that doesn’t mean the film hasn’t been a crazy success at the box office. The movie was the first film of the year to reach a billion dollars at the box office, and has been continuing to hold audience interest week over week since its early April release date.
With such an incredible box office run (and perhaps inspired by the runaway success of Project Hail Mary), it looks like the Super Mario Galaxy Movie will now become the second movie this year to enjoy an extended theatrical window, with the movie officially missing its projected May 5 digital release date. And though neither Illumination nor Nintendo have mentioned a new possible at-home streaming date, here’s what I think is going on, not only with the film’s initial VOD streaming date, but with its subsequent Peacock and Netflix streaming dates as well:

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will get a small extended theatrical release
Illumination isn’t leaving money on the table
Right now, there are a lot of big movies in theaters, including Michael, The Devil Wears Prada 2, and even Project Hail Marywhich is still performing well, over two months after its initial release.
However, one thing that all these movies have in common is that they’re not specifically aimed at children. Now that may change this weekend with the release of The Sheep Detectives, but considering that this upcoming family film is not part of an existing IP or franchise, Illumination may be trying to capitalize on the fact that The Super Mario Galaxy Movie may still play well with families looking for something to do as schools across the US begin to let out for the summer.
So where does that leave The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’s streaming debut? It will probably still land on digital platforms like Apple TV and Fandango at Home later this month, likely after the Memorial Day weekend. If you just can’t wait, you can already pre-order the film on both of these platforms for $29.99, or you can pre-order the 4K or Blu-ray version of the movie on Amazon.
When is The Super Mario Galaxy Movie coming to Peacock and/or Netflix?
Later this year on Peacock, 2027 for Netflix
Because it is an Illumination release (which is owned by NBCUniversal), the Super Mario Galaxy Movie will be making its way to Peacock sometime later this year. The official date has not yet been announced, but given the timing of other Universal movie releases on the service, I’d guess that an August or September debut for subscribers is likely.
Unfortunately, those who want to watch The Super Mario Galaxy Movie on Netflix may have to wait a little bit longer. Universal’s deal with the biggest name in streaming ensures that all new Illumination releases will find their way to the service eventually for a limited amount of time, but only after a period of theatrical, VOD and then Peacock exclusivity. Given how big the Super Mario Galaxy Movie is, I think it’s safe to assume that this film won’t be coming to Netflix until at least early 2027.
