Based on the incredible true story, The Social Network performed well at the box office, grossing $225 million on a $40 million budget, according to Box Office Mojo. The film also received eight Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, and won three awards for Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Film Editing, and Best Original Score. Many critics ranked it among the best films of 2010, and many also listed it as one of the greatest films of the 21st century. In The Social Network, we follow Zuckerberg as he is sued by his former friend and Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin, as well as the Winklevoss twins, for his shady business practices. As these legal cases unfold, the film takes audiences back in time to show how a painful college breakup led him to create what would become one of the biggest social networking websites on the planet. Though the movie could’ve suffered under a different filmmaker, Fincher delivers a gripping legal drama thanks to his sharp direction and Sorkin’s witty script.
Overall, The Social Network shows how the pursuit of power and wealth can lead someone to burn bridges with those closest to them. Though the film’s version of Zuckerberg sees himself as a tortured genius ostracized for being a “nerd,” it becomes clear that he is a callous, selfish man who drives away those around him. Jesse Eisenberg captures the nuance and intensity of Zuckerberg’s character, which earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Actor.
At the same time, the film depicts sexism and misogyny as a driving force for Facebook’s inception, with Mark spitefully launching the site as a place to rank women based on attractiveness. Since such toxic treatment of women has become widespread on the platform and social media in general, the story of The Social Network is just as timely as it was when it premiered over 15 years ago.
It also makes for a strong precursor to the events of The Social Reckoning. This sequel stars Mikey Madison and Jeremy Allen White as a Facebook whistleblower and a reporter who leaks Facebook’s dirty secrets in 2021. While neither Fincher nor Eisenberg has returned for this film, Sorkin has served as both director and writer. We also see Zuckerberg played by Succession star Jeremy Strong, who looks and sounds even more like the actual tech CEO than Eisenberg.
