Today, the world lost an acting legend when Sir Patrick Stewart died at age 86. Born on July 13, 1940, the renowned thespian played several iconic roles in film and television over his nearly 70-year career. He famously portrayed Marvel superhero Professor X in the X-Men movies and Avery Bullock in American Dad!. Both franchises featured my favorite performances from Stewart. However, he is arguably most famous for his lead role as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation.
Premiering in 1987, the show featured Stewart filling in for actor William Shatner as the leader of the U.S.S. Enterprise almost a century after the events of the original series. For seven seasons, Stewart graced our televisions with his presence, leading his valiant crew across the cosmos as they explored strange new worlds, sought new life and new civilizations, and boldly went where no one had gone before.
Before joining the Star Trek franchise, Stewart was primarily known for his role in Shakespearean theater. However, his performance as Picard made him a household name. He was also nominated for a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series. Stewart reprised his iconic role in multiple Star Trek movies set in the Next Generation era, as well as the sequel series, Star Trek: Picard.
Since Stewart was one of my all-time favorite actors, I plan to revisit his illustrious legacy by watching Star Trek: The Next Generation. For those who want to do the same, here’s where you can stream Stewart’s breakout sci-fi series.
Where can I stream Star Trek: The Next Generation?
Stream Patrick Stewart’s iconic series on Pluto TV
All seven seasons of Star Trek: The Next Generation are now available on Pluto TV. You can stream the series on-demand or watch it on its live TV channel on the platform. You can also stream all the Star Trek movies in which Stewart played Picard: Generations, First Contact, Insurrection, and Nemesis.
Since Pluto TV is an ad-supported platform, nobody needs to create an account or pay for a subscription to stream the series. All of Picard’s adventures are 100% free to watch. You can stream the show from your web browser or through the Pluto TV app, which you can download on iOS and Android smartphones/tablets. The app is also available on Smart TVs and streaming devices like Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, Roku, Hisense, LC, or Google Chromecast.
If you don’t enjoy Pluto TV, Star Trek: The Next Generation is also available to Paramount+ subscribers. The cheapest tier is Paramount+ Essential, which costs $8.99/month. This subscription features ads, but you can upgrade to the Premium tier to stream without ads for $13.99/month. Streaming platforms like Amazon Prime Video, YouTube, and The Roku Channel feature Star Trek: The Next Generation, but you can only watch it through the Paramount+ add-on.
Since Paramount+ and Pluto TV stream the series with ads at best, I’d watch it on the latter, where it’s free. Either way, the show will bring up a lot of emotions now that Stewart has passed. May he rest in peace.
