Kanye West’s return to the stage has once again placed the rapper at the center of a familiar debate: where does accountability end and forgiveness begin? His two-night Chicago homecoming at Soldier Field brought Ye together with several longtime collaborators, but Kid Cudi’s appearance carried particular weight. After years of estrangement, the two reunited onstage for ‘Father Stretch My Hands Pt. 1,’ ‘Ghost Town,’ and ‘Pursuit of Happiness,’ signaling a reconciliation that once seemed unlikely.

While fans adored the reunion, as Kid Cudi had distanced himself from Ye in recent years, many were critical of it. And answering that, Cudi made his stance clear on where he stands with Ye.

Kid Cudi responds to criticism post his performance with Ye

While the performance at Ye’s recent concert made fans relive the golden days with Kid Cudi on stage, it left a sour taste in the mouths of many. Peter Rosenberg was not exactly thrilled by the warm reception Kanye West received during his Chicago weekend. The New York radio personality took to X to call out people he felt were too quick to embrace West again, pointing to the rapper’s recent history and his “Heil Hitler” song from just a year ago. 

Sharing this post, Kid Cudi replied to the criticism, defending Ye in his X post. Cudi defended his relationship with West, saying their nearly two-decade friendship makes Ye family to him. He argued that West has made sincere amends for his past behavior, is doing better mentally, and deserves grace, adding that he personally held West accountable before accepting his apology.

“That man is my brother. U dont have a relationship w him like I do. Damn near 2 decades of art and friendship,” Cudi wrote.

Rosenberg clarified to Kid Cudi’s tweet that his criticism was not aimed at Cudi personally, but at fans celebrating West as a hero so soon after his offensive remarks. While acknowledging forgiveness and empathy, he argued that West should seek genuine help, step away from the spotlight, and only return after taking accountability.

A look at Kid Cudi and Ye’s friendship

Kid Cudi and Kanye West’s relationship has never been a straightforward one. What began with West signing Cudi to ‘G.O.O.D.’ Music in 2008 quickly developed into a creative partnership that helped shape both artists’ careers. Cudi contributed to West’s music beginning with ‘808s & Heartbreak’, while West played a significant role in Cudi’s early solo career.

Their bond, however, has repeatedly been tested. In 2016, the two had a very public falling-out after Cudi criticized West and other artists over the use of songwriters. West responded from the stage, but later walked back his anger and described Cudi as his “brother.” The reconciliation eventually led to one of their most celebrated collaborations, ‘Kids See Ghosts,’ the 2018 album that brought their contrasting styles and personal struggles together.

The relationship fractured again in the years that followed, with Cudi even saying in 2022 that it would take a “miracle” for the two to become friends again. That history makes Cudi’s latest defense particularly significant. His insistence that West is “family” and their recent reunion suggests that, despite everything that has happened between them, their nearly two decades of friendship still carry a weight that outsiders may not fully understand.
