Terrifying moment ferry taking passengers from Alcatraz smashes into pier leaving shattered glass flying everywhere

A ferry carrying passengers back from Alcatraz Island smashed into a San Francisco pier and sent shattered glass flying everywhere.

Footage captured by passenger Genesis Alcocer and shared with ABC 7 showed the moment the boat collided with Pier 31 during the docking process Sunday evening.

The impact caused the vessel’s glass windows to shatter and reportedly knocked several passengers off their feet.

‘For me, I was like, oh my god, we’re gonna sink. I’m not the best swimmer,’ Alcocer recalled in an interview with the outlet.

‘The people that worked there were not making a big deal about it, but you could tell in their face that they were panicking,’ she added.

Other witnesses claimed they heard a ‘loud noise’ and felt the entire boat shake as the ferry struck the pier several times before coming to a stop.

Passengers alleged crew kept them on board the ferry for about 20 minutes before they were permitted to exit the ship.

Olivia RiosAcuña, who had been travelling on the ferry with her young son, suggested the crew tried to downplay the traumatic incident.

She alleged that a crew member told them ‘you guys sure had an exciting entry’ and urged them to ‘have a great day’ as they disembarked from the ferry.

RiosAcuña added that her son, who was known to have a love of boats, described it as the ‘worst day ever’ and was left crying after the incident.

Alcatraz City Cruises has confirmed the incident.

The tour operated noted that no injuries were reported and said it will carry out an investigation to determine the cause of the crash.

The ferry did sustain visible damage to the passenger windows, but the overall extent of the damage has not been disclosed.

The maximum-security prison, located on the small, rocky island just off the coast of San Francisco, opened in 1933.

The penitentiary housed many famous criminals including Al Capone, Robert Stroud, George ‘Machine Gun’ Kelly, and the escapees Frank Morris and the Anglin brothers.

But by 1963 its facilities were crumbling and, with an estimated cost of $5 million for repairs, the government decided it was too expensive to maintain and shut it down.

In the years since, it has become a gruesome attraction, drawing flocks of tourists from around the world who are eager for a peek behind the bars.
