Now Steve Toussaint says Lord Corlys is not the kind of man who simply takes orders, and that decision carries serious consequences.

Lord Corlys reaches his breaking point

Speaking to Variety, SteveToussaint said Corlys reaches a breaking point after Rhaenyra refuses to legitimize his sons, Addam and Alyn, as true Velaryons.

“It’s one of the things that he does without thinking,” he explained, describing the moment as a blunt outburst from a man who has finally run out of patience.

He added that Corlys is essentially daring anyone to deny what he believes is already obvious, because in his view, the truth does not change just because Rhaenyra refuses to say it aloud.

In that same Variety conversation, Toussaint made it clear that Corlys no longer fears the consequences of speaking out.

“I don’t fear death, actually, because I’ve done everything in this world,” he said, framing the confrontation as the choice of someone who has already weighed what he stands to lose.

For Corlys, the issue is not comfort or position but legacy, and the future of the Velaryon name. Toussaint also tied the moment back to Rhaenys, suggesting Corlys is trying to honor the woman he loved by securing a place for their family’s next generation.

“You need to do right by those kids,” he recalled as a guiding sentiment. When Rhaenyra refuses, that loyalty shifts into open defiance, leaving their alliance on uncertain ground.

But while tensions rise inside the Red Keep, another threat may already be taking shape beyond its walls.

A new power could challenge Rhaenyra’s rule

House of the Dragon season 3 is beginning to hint at a different kind of danger, one that does not come from dragons or armies. Rhaenyra has secured King’s Landing, but ruling it is proving far more complicated, and the show suggests that the Faith could become a serious factor in what comes next.

The introduction of High Septon Balman stands out as a key development. His visible distrust of dragons and skepticism toward Rhaenyra signals a growing divide between the crown and religious authority. In Fire & Blood, a figure known as the Shepherd later rises as a powerful anti-dragon voice, gaining influence as fear spreads among the people. The series appears to be laying similar groundwork through Balman, offering a more gradual path to that kind of upheaval.

This approach allows the story to build tension over time rather than introducing chaos without warning. If Balman evolves into a central figure, he could channel public frustration into something far more dangerous, especially as hardship and unrest take hold in the city. That would mean Rhaenyra’s challenges are not limited to rival factions but extend to the very people she rules.
