Stephen King’s first terrifying movie adaptation is now streaming for free

Author Stephen King has given audiences some of the most distinctive and popular horror stories ever adapted to film and television. Over the past fifty years, King has given audiences iconic scary stories like The Shining, Salem’s Lot, Cujo, It, and The Mist. After all this time, Hollywood continues to deliver gripping adaptations of his work, with the most recent examples including It: Welcome to Derry, The Monkey, and The Long Walk.

While there are several King stories that have yet to be adapted, Hollywood tends to revisit some of the author’s most popular books that have already been adapted. Most recently, horror filmmaker Mike Flanagan has developed a streaming miniseries based on King’s book Carrie for Amazon Prime Video. Scheduled to premiere on October 7, 2026, this streaming remake loosely adapts the story, expanding upon the source material and setting it in the modern age of social media.

This upcoming series has to reach a high bar set by Scarface and Mission: Impossible director Brian De Palma’s 1976 adaptation of Carrie. While fans await the premiere of Flanagan’s remake, they can now stream the original Carrie film, which remains one of the best Stephen King adaptations ever.

Carrie is one of Stephen King’s most iconic adaptations

Carrie explores the horrors of high school, adolescence, and bullying

Though King has written stories about child-eating clowns, haunted hotels, and bloodthirsty vampires, Carrie shows that the scariest creatures in the world are the ones we see in our everyday lives. Released in 1976, the movie follows Carrie White, a shy teenager with telekinetic powers who is constantly bullied by her high school classmates. But even when she’s not at school, Carrie is abused at home by her mother, a religious fanatic who believes almost everything is a sin.

After a prank goes too far and ruins her prom night, Carrie uses her psychic abilities to unleash years of repressed rage and exact bloody, fiery vengeance on the kids who have wronged and mocked her. All this makes for a tragic coming-of-age story of a young girl who just wants to be loved and accepted, only to succumb to anger and destroy countless lives, including her own.

Carrie was based on King’s first published book and was also the first movie adaptation of one of his literary works. Not only was Carrie a box-office success when it premiered, but it was one of the few horror movies to receive multiple Academy Award nominations. Stars Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie were nominated for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress for their roles as Carrie and Margaret White, respectively.

To this day, Carrie remains a classic horror gem that catapulted King into the spotlight, setting off his career as one of the world’s most successful and prolific authors. It also joined the several groundbreaking horror movies that terrified audiences throughout the 1970s, including The Exorcist, Jaws, Halloween, Dawn of the Dead, and Alien.

There’s also the 2013 remake starring Chloë Grace Moretz and Julianne Moore. Though they’re not as widely beloved as the original film, they should offer different interpretations of King’s story.

For those itching for other King films and movies, Tubi has several other adaptations available to watch, including Stephen King’s The Shining, The Dark Half, Children of the Corn, and Apt Pupil. There’s also plenty of non-King scary movies and shows, such as The Twilight Zone, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, The Evil Dead, The Witch, Terrifier 3, and No One Will Save You.

All in all, Tubi has plenty of horror movies to entertain fans of the genre as they wait for Mike Flanagan’s Carrie. Whether or not it lives up to the original movie, both versions offer unique versions of King’s iconic horror novel that demand to be seen.
