A young New York progressive has gone viral on social media for preaching about socialist views while hailing from a wealthy Ohio family, but defended herself by invoking a controversial French phrase. 

Grace Ryan, 25, has been active in NYC politics, but was the subject of social media scrutiny after internet sleuths discovered her wealth. 

She brushed off the criticism, arguing that her riches do not negate her politics, writing on X: ‘Everyone’s trying to dunk on me for being a progressive from a privileged background but like have yall never heard of noblesse oblige? 

‘I have a moral obligation to use my advantages to help those who are struggling.’

The term ‘noblesse oblige’ has French origins and refers to the belief that wealthy individuals have an obligation to give back. 

The post generated fierce debate in the comments, with some criticizing Ryan for being out of touch with the marginalized communities she advocates for. 

‘Yes, we’re dunking on you because you and your fellow privileged friends are completely isolated from the policies you advocate and implement. This is clearly evident especially with progressives’ crime and housing policies,’ one comment read. 

‘If you feel guilt due to your wealth then find a charity you like and give away as much as you want to. But that’s not an excuse to try to force the rest of us into a system that has failed everywhere it has been tried,’ another added.

Ryan went viral on X last week after she was criticized for advocating for socialist ideals while coming from a wealthy family 

Ryan has shared photos of herself in front of luxury vehicles and on boats on social media 

‘Lol noblesse oblige is… not a good thing. It’s rightfully ridiculed for being the patronizing, condescending, out of touch way of thinking that it is,’ a third wrote. 

In response to the slew of negative comments, Ryan said she would donate the revenue she makes from X to a homeless shelter in New York. 

‘I’ve decided I’m going to donate my payout this month to the Ali Forney Center. Shoutout to all the angry blue checks tweeting me threats — you’re funding housing for queer kids,’ she said. 

Ryan’s father, Michael Ryan, previously owned the Columbus-based chocolate company, Maramor Chocolates. 

The Columbus Dispatch reported in 2008 that Michael Ryan purchased the company from its longtime owners in 2002. 

He previously owned a manufacturer’s automation equipment company and sold it to a private-equity firm. 

Michael Ryan worked to put the chocolates on shelves nationwide and developed popular products like its Omega-3 line. 

According to the New York Post, Ryan attended a $35,000-a-year private school before her tenure at the prestigious New York University.

Stu Smith, an investigative analyst at the Manhattan Institute, told the outlet that Ryan’s comment was ‘absurd.’ 

‘You could be someone who was an aristocrat that got revolutionary consciousness, but the concept she’s invoking is totally antithetical to that. 

‘It is so absurd that she would bring that up, because she’s invoking a bourgeois ideal. It’s so asinine and so arguably anti-socialist.’

Ryan’s LinkedIn states that she was recently an organizer for Brad Lander’s congressional race.

She also advocated for Zohran Mamdani’s mayoral campaign. Mamdani was elected last year and is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America. 

Ryan was criticized online for making an ‘out-of-touch’ post about her progressive values 

The progressive group has made headlines recently after multiple members ran successful races. 

One of the main critiques of the political group is that although it claims to advocate for marginalized communities, a majority of its members are white, educated and upper-class. 

An internal survey of NYC-DSA shared with City and State reported that about 60 percent of the group’s members identify as white. 

A 2021 survey of the national chapter found that 85 percent of the DSA’s members identify as white.
