The Sarajevo Film Festival has announced that the actor will receive the Honorary Heart of Sarajevo at its 32nd edition. It is fitting recognition for a performer whose shelf already holds a Primetime Emmy Award and a Screen Actors Guild Award, alongside three Academy Award nominations that cemented his Hollywood legacy.
Whether audiences cherish Harrelson as Haymitch Abernathy or Marty Hart, such a tribute always felt destined for an actor defined by unforgettable performances.
32nd Sarajevo Film Festival to honor Woody Harrelson for his impeccable career
To mark the occasion, the Sarajevo Film Festival will screen Michael Winterbottom’s Welcome to Sarajevo, neatly tying Woody Harrelson’s latest honor to a story forever linked with the city. The social media announcement of the Honorary Heart of Sarajevo distinction also places the True Detective star alongside cinematic giants including Robert De Niro, Angelina Jolie, Morgan Freeman, Willem Dafoe, and Benicio Del Toro.
“In recognition of his exceptional contribution to the art of film, Woody Harrelson will receive the Honorary Heart of Sarajevo at the 32nd Sarajevo Film Festival,” the festival wrote while unveiling the honor. Even the director of the festival, Jovan Marjanović, had to praise his ability to ease into different characters by calling it “one of the hardest qualities to achieve on screen” in an official press announcement.

The announcement arrives amid a celebratory year for the Sarajevo Film Festival. The event will close with a newly restored version of Danis Tanović’s Academy Award-winning No Man’s Land, marking 25 years since its Cannes Film Festival premiere. Bosnian screen veteran Emir Hadžihafizbegović will also receive the Honorary Heart of Sarajevo, giving this year’s ceremony an added sense of homegrown pride alongside global recognition.
Even if Woody Harrelson would rather award Mark Ruffalo for saving his life, audiences are finding the re-screening of teh ever-interesting Welcome to Sarajevo every bit as compelling.
Re-introducing Welcome to Sarajevo
Long before Woody Harrelson was headed for the Honorary Heart of Sarajevo, he was part of one of cinema’s most unflinching portraits of Bosnian history. Michael Winterbottom’s Welcome to Sarajevo follows British television journalist Michael Henderson, whose reporting takes a deeply personal turn after encountering an orphanage caught in the siege. Inspired by Michael Nicholson’s Natasha’s Story, the drama blurs journalism with humanity.

The 1997 Anglo-American production premiered at the Cannes Film Festival before arriving in United Kingdom cinemas later that year through FilmFour Distributors. Filmed on Sarajevo’s own streets shortly after the conflict, it weaves authentic news footage into its storytelling with remarkable immediacy. Nearly three decades later, that very film now fittingly accompanies Harrelson’s latest honor in the city that inspired it.
