Samsung’s new SmartTag 3 looks a lot like an AirTag ‣ Diverse Daily

Hot off the announcement of its new Galaxy Tab S12 series, Samsung has another product reveal up its sleeve to cap off September: the new SmartTag 3.

If you’re unfamiliar with Samsung’s SmartTag, it’s an object tracker similar to Apple’s AirTag, the Google Pixel Tag, and the MotoTag, all of which help you track and find misplaced items such as a backpack, luggage, keys, a wallet, and more.

The SmartTag 3 is Samsung’s latest take on its object tracker, and compared to the SmartTag 2, which launched in 2023, it brings a major design shake-up along with a couple of upgrades.

What originally set Samsung’s SmartTag apart from the AirTag was its design. Instead of being coin-shaped, the SmartTag had an elongated, pill-shaped design with a built-in ring hole, making it easy to attach to something like a backpack. But with the SmartTag 3, Samsung has thrown that design out the window and moved closer to the look of an AirTag, opting for a squircle shape that’s essentially a mix between a square and a circle.

Thanks to the new design, Samsung says the SmartTag 3 is 35 percent smaller and 33 percent lighter than the SmartTag 2, weighing just 9.15 grams. However, if you still want a keyring holder like the one on the SmartTag 2, Samsung will sell a silicone case for the SmartTag 3 that includes one.

The SmartTag 3 still uses the standard CR2032 battery, but Samsung says it’s 10 percent more power-efficient than the SmartTag 2, offering up to 550 days of battery life in normal mode. It’s also equipped with Bluetooth 6, which expands the range of Compass View and lets you track an item with directional guidance from up to 60 meters away. Samsung says that’s roughly three times farther than the previous generation. It also has an IP67 water and dust resistance rating.

Another big change with the SmartTag 3 is location sharing. Samsung has made it possible to share the SmartTag 3’s location not only with other Galaxy devices but also with iOS devices. In other words, with SmartThings Find, you can share the SmartTag 3’s location with a friend or family member, whether they use a Galaxy phone or an iPhone.

“People have long wanted a simpler and more convenient way to keep track of the belongings and pets they care about with greater peace of mind, and Galaxy SmartTag 3 was designed around those everyday needs,” said Jay Kim, Samsung’s executive vice president. “Powered by the vast Galaxy Find Network, it delivers our most capable Galaxy SmartTag experience yet.”

Samsung said it plans to launch the SmartTag 3 in early November. It will be available in two colors: black and white, with prices starting at $30 for a single pack and $100 for a four-pack.
