Bruce Dern reveals the heated moment behind the camera

Bruce Dern, spoke with PEOPLE while celebrating the Cannes Film Festival debut of the documentary Dernsie: The Amazing Life of Bruce Dern. According to Dern, the incident happened while filming a scene between Pitt’s Cliff Booth and Dern’s George Spahn. Dern improvised a line during the take, prompting Pitt to suddenly cut the camera. Tarantino reportedly reacted immediately. 

“Never again in your life will you ever cut a camera or you will be dead in this business. That is my domain. Do not stop behavior,” Dern recalled the director saying.

Despite the fiery exchange, sources close to the production later clarified that Tarantino and Pitt have maintained a strong relationship over the years. In fact, Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood became one of the defining films of Pitt’s late-career reinvention. The film grossed over $390 million worldwide and earned ten Academy Award nominations, with Pitt ultimately winning the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.

For longtime Tarantino fans, the story almost feels fitting. Tarantino directs like a vinyl obsessive guarding a rare pressing. That obsessive control has defined his collaborations for decades, especially with actors willing to surrender completely to his cinematic rhythm.
