Designed by Robert Bernstein of neverbeforedesign, ‘The Banned Books Jail’ installation features a large metal gate resembling prison bars, symbolically confining books that have faced bans in the U.S. for reasons ranging from LGBTQIA+ content to political dissent. Despite the visual metaphor of imprisonment, the artwork conveys resistance — books appear to be escaping. This reinforces Virginia Woolf’s assertion that ideas cannot truly be locked away.
‘The Banned Books Jail’ installation serves as a commentary on historical and ongoing book challenges while aligning with the museum’s broader mission to explore the cultural significance of books as physical and intellectual artifacts. An unveiling event on World Book Day, featuring the artist and guest speakers, will further contextualize the work within current discussions on free expression.
