A new mother and her boyfriend have been charged after a significant drug operation in Melbourne’s outer-eastern suburbs.

Alannah Svrakov was pregnant and had just turned 23 when she and her partner Reece Thomas were arrested by drug detectives on May 19 over their alleged involvement in a methamphetamine syndicate. 

Svrakov, who is charged with trafficking a commercial quantity of methamphetamine, appeared via remote link at the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, having only recently given birth.

She had been arrested at her Croydon Hills home alongside Thomas, who was also scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday.

Svrakov is additionally accused of possessing multiple drugs and trafficking 1,4 butanediol, an industrial solvent sometimes sold as GHB under the names ‘bute’ or ‘liquid fantasy’.

Police allege that Svrakov was found in possession of $34,115, suspected to be the proceeds of crime.

She is further charged with intentionally permitting the use of a premises for drug trafficking after police allegedly discovered various drugs at a Chirnside Park storage unit.

It is alleged that Svrakov ran the drug operation out of the storage unit between August 13 last year and May 19 this year.

Thomas, 22, has been charged with multiple counts of trafficking a commercial quantity of methamphetamine and is alleged to have been involved in drug transactions in Seville, Lilydale, Croydon and Chirnside Park between March 26 and April 29.

He is also charged with dealing with $206,000 suspected to be the proceeds of crime at various locations prior to his May 19 arrest.

Facing more than 70 charges in total, Thomas was allegedly found with 100g of gold bullion worth $22,000 and assorted jewellery, both suspected to be proceeds of crime, at Seville.

Thomas is further charged with trafficking 1,4 butanediol and was allegedly in possession of various weapons, including a dagger, machete, taser, knuckledusters and imitation firearms.

Police also allege he was in possession of firearms, including longarms, ammunition and two unregistered handguns.

It is understood police had Thomas under covert surveillance as he travelled between suspected drug locations while allegedly driving unlicensed.

A third accused, Jessica Thomas, also appeared in court on Wednesday charged with multiple offences, including trafficking methamphetamine and knowingly dealing with the proceeds of crime.

The 30-year-old was allegedly found at a Seville property in the Yarra Ranges with methamphetamine, cannabis and $143,775 in cash.

The arrests followed a covert 10-month operation by Croydon Divisional Response Unit detectives into the alleged syndicate operating in the outer-eastern suburbs and Yarra Ranges.

Police are understood to have kept Reece Thomas and other alleged participants under surveillance before making their arrests.

Thomas was also allegedly found with ecstasy, various schedule 4 poisons, Xanax and oxycodone hydrochloride, often referred to as ‘Hillbilly Heroin’.

According to a police statement, officers executed eight search warrants at properties and storage units, including raids at Bayswater North, Boronia, Croydon and Mooroolbark.

Police reportedly seized 800g of methamphetamine, $22,000 in gold bullion, four firearms, more than $200,000 in cash, designer fashion items and luxury vehicles.

A 44-year-old man was also arrested at the Seville property and allegedly found with a handgun, a sawn-off .22 calibre rifle and a sawn-off shotgun.

Victoria Police spokesperson Sergeant Russell Church warned alleged drug dealers of severe penalties if convicted.

‘The consequences of trafficking drugs extend far beyond an arrest. The charge carries a maximum prison sentence of up to 25 years,’ Sergeant Church said in May.

The court heard that the prosecution will require about three months to test the drugs and conduct DNA and fingerprint analysis.

Svrakov and Jessica Thomas had their bail extended and will return to court in November, while Reece Thomas remains on remand ahead of his next appearance.
