Everyone’s learning about the latest micro RGB tech and comparing OLED to mini-LED, but portable TVs are rarely mentioned in the conversation. It’s understandable as there’s a perception that bigger is better with TVs, and portable models are more for niche use and aren’t as glamorous or innovative as the latest 100-inch behemoth on the market.
That changes today, and I’m going to give portable TVs the attention they deserve and explain why they are just as innovative and worth considering. I’ll admit these TVs aren’t for mainstream buyers looking to recreate the theater experience at home. They fulfill a different role and have some surprising tricks up their sleeves. Today, you’ll find out what the deal is with portable TVs and if you should get one.
What are portable TVs?
TVs for travel
The name says it all, and portable TVs are usually 32 inches or smaller and include mobility features. Some, like Samsung’s The Movingstyle, and the KTC MegaPad A25Q5, have built-in carry handles, while LG’s StandbyME Go takes things a step further with a briefcase design for easy and safe transportation.
Portable TVs often include detachable stands with wheels for moving them from room to room. The stands are usually height-adjustable and offer 90 degrees of rotation between portrait and landscape modes, as well as tilt and swivel options. You can also disconnect the TV and use the integrated kickstand if you prefer having it on a desk.
Portable TVs usually have lower resolutions than regular big-screen models because of their size.
Portable TVs usually have lower resolutions than regular big-screen models because of their size. Smaller 25-inch models, like the KTC MegaPad A25Q5, offer 1080p resolution, while 27-inch models, like Samsung’s The Movingstyle, offer QHD (2,560 x 1,440) resolution. Larger 32-inch models, like the ApoloSign and KTC MegaPad 32, offer 4K resolution. These portable TVs use standard LCDs, and you won’t find OLEDs or Mini-LED models as yet.
What unique features do portable TVs have?
Tablet-like touchscreens
Most portable TVs are actually hybrid devices and include touchscreens for easy navigation and internet browsing. LG and Samsung models usually stick to proprietary TV operating systems, like WebOS and Tizen. Brands like ApoloSign and KTC run on Android and can function as giant tablets.
Built-in batteries are another unique feature of portable TVs that differentiates them from regular models.

What’s the point of a portable TV?
Portable TVs are ideal for on-the-go users who want to enjoy content on the road. They’re also great for people who want a single, do-it-all device that can serve as a TV or monitor. Some buyers have limited space, and these TVs fit smaller apartments and bedrooms and can easily be moved between them without requiring a separate mounting system or stand.

They’ll fit in most cars and can be a better option than portable projectors for company presentations because they work in all lighting conditions. You can also use them at product launches and expos to showcase your new releases or promote your brand.
What’s it like using a portable TV?
It’s more than just a TV
I tested KTC’s MegaPad A25Q5 and think it’s an incredible multifunction device. At first glance, it’s a 25-inch smart TV with a remote control and all the usual streaming services baked in. I enjoyed watching movies and shows on Netflix and could also play content from a memory stick. It’s also a computer monitor, and I plugged it into my laptop via USB-C as a massive secondary display. The Android OS and built-in storage add another dimension to its functionality. I used the MegaPad as a giant tablet, accessing all my favorite apps on its expansive touchscreen.

Then I added a wireless mouse and keyboard, and it became a desktop PC for browsing the internet and typing documents and emails. It turned into an Android gaming console after I added a Bluetooth controller, and I had no issues playing demanding titles. Overall, I was surprised by its smooth operation with no connectivity issues or lag. The internal battery was the cherry on top, letting me watch content and play games in my garden.
Should you get a portable TV?
They aren’t for everyone
Portable TVs aren’t viable alternatives to regular models for buyers seeking large displays and a cinematic experience. Instead, they cater to a different target market that values mobility. Their smaller size and built-in batteries make them a practical choice that works anywhere without a power cord. Portable monitors are also ideal for buyers who want a single multifunction device that can serve as a smart TV, computer monitor, and Android tablet.
