When it comes to movies about the worlds beyond planet Earth, there are a lot of great choices. From the historically accurate Apollo 13, to the survival-focused The Martian, and even the recent blockbuster Project Hail Mary, it seems that space fans are spoiled for choice when it comes to iconic films focused on the larger universe. However, even though all of these films have been critically acclaimed, there is one title that stands head and shoulders above the rest, at least in pop culture: Interstellar.
This 2014 film by director Christopher Nolan, follows Cooper (Matthew McConaughey) a widowed former NASA test pilot who is recruited for a deep-space mission to find humanity a new home among the stars following the development of extreme, unlivable conditions on Earth. What follows is an exhilarating story that explores themes of exploration, sacrifice, and the true nature of humanity as it tries to make its first stretch across the stars.
In addition to unforgettable performances from an ensemble cast that includes Anne Hathaway, David Gyasi, Matt Damon, Michael Caine, Jessica Chastain and Timothy Chalamet, the film is unique in that real scientists who work on black holes and space-time relativity were consulted extensively to ensure that the science represented in the film was as close to reality as possible.
If you haven’t seen this movie yet, you’re officially out of excuses, as next month will finally bring it to a free streaming service.

As part of its extensive May lineup of new movies and TV shows, Tubi will be adding Interstallar to its library. Though you’ll have to deal with ads, if you are streaming on a budget and want to see one of the best science fiction films about space ever made, now’s your chance to do it for free.
Of course, if you’d rather have an ad-free experience, you can purchase or rent the film from Apple TV, Fandango at Home, or YouTube starting at $4 (for standard quality). Interstellar is also available physically on Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD from Amazon.
What else is coming to Tubi in May?
Plenty of critically-acclaimed films are now free to stream
When I recently tried out the ChatGPT Tubi app, the chatbot told me that if I was looking for critically-acclaimed movies, I probably wouldn’t find much to watch on the service. However, it should have instead just told me to be patient, as May brings plenty of highly-rated movies to the service, including the musical Dreamgirls, mind-bending sci-fi thriller Ex-Machina, the family-friendly Mrs. Doubtfite, and another critically-acclaimed film starring Matthew McConaughey, The Lincoln Lawyer. You can check out the full list of new May arrivals at Tubi’s official blog here.
