Obsession 4K UHD, Blu-ray and streaming release now available

After a mysterious listing update yesterday, as of this morning it’s official: Obsession is now available to purchase ($25) or rent ($20) on VOD streaming platforms, including Apple TV, Fandango at Home and Amazon Prime Video.

Interestingly, though the film carries an R-rating on both Fandango at Home and Amazon Prime Video, the Apple TV version is listed as Unrated, which caused some excitement about a new edition of the movie possibly being available digitally on this specific platform. However, as of this writing, the version on Apple TV, despite having a different rating, is identical to the ones on the other streaming platforms.

While Obsession will be exclusive to these VOD streaming platforms for now, if you want to own the film physically, I have good news about pre-orders for Obsession’s 4K UHD/Blu-ray release as well.

After a quick hiccup a month ago, Obsession is once again available to pre-order on 4K UHD as well as Blu-ray disc on Amazon and Walmart. And while I originally thought that the push back of the streaming release would subsequently move the 4K UHD/Blu-ray release further down the schedule, it looks like that was an incorrect assumption, as the physical release is sticking with its intended July 14th street date, which is in just two weeks.

Though digital VOD releases typically have a 30-day exclusivity window, it looks like the rules were bent a little for Obsession, which has had quite the atypical theater-to-streaming route.

In addition to the theatrical version of the film itself, both the 4K UHD and Blu-ray discs include a feature-length commentary from Director Curry Barker as well as a behind-the-scenes featurette called Obsession Unleashed that includes interviews with the cast.

Could Obsession come to Peacock sooner?

Because the streaming and physical releases are happening so quickly, the Peacock streaming debut for Obsession could feasibly happen sooner as well. While I originally thought this movie wouldn’t debut on Peacock until October, an earlier fall debut, perhaps in September could absolutely happen now, allowing Peacock subscribers to watch this movie again and again all throughout the fall spooky season.

As for Netflix, I’m sticking with my original prediction that this film, if it hits the service at all, won’t do so until 2027. Obsession has been a huge hit for production company Blumhouse and because it is set to hit Peacock first, I doubt parent company Universal will want to give up any part of their exclusivity window early.
