Two young boys severely injured a woman who was walking her dog after they took their parents’ car for a joyride in California. 

The boys, who are just four and seven, stole their parents’ car while they were sleeping and drove around the neighborhood, where they struck a woman walking her dog at high speed on Thursday in Oakland. 

They were driving down 35th Avenue when they struck the woman in the crosswalk, rolled over a median, and hit a fence, surveillance footage showed, according to ABC 7. 

Before hitting the woman, the boys also sideswiped another vehicle. 

The boys were only a few blocks away from their home. They were found outside of the vehicle after the crash, police said. 

The woman was left in critical condition, and all three of them were taken to the hospital, Fox 8 Live reported. The dog was not hurt and ran away, the outlet reported. 

Witness Anthony Hudson estimated the boys were driving at least 60 mph when they hit the woman. 

Another witness, Lavelle Shah-Marquis, ran over to help the boys after the crash, where he heard them talking with each other about stealing their mother’s car.

The boys were seen on the sidewalk after the crash. A witness said an airbag hit one of them so hard it launched them into the backseat. They were taken to the hospital in stable condition 

Shah-Marquis said the woman lost consciousness immediately. 

‘They were just doing CPR the whole time,’ Hudson said. ‘It was tragic, and I’m still a little shook by it.’ 

Two good Samaritans were able to keep the woman, who is in her 30s, alive until first responders arrived, KPIX reported. 

Shah-Marquis said the car’s airbag ‘hit [one of] the children so hard, it put him to the backseat.’ 

Neighbors rushed to help the children, who lay on the sidewalk. Their parents later arrived, witnesses said. 

‘These parents need to be held responsible,’ Shah-Marquis told KPIX. ‘You have someone here that literally could possibly lose their life off the account of being irresponsible.’ 

The parents are cooperating with the investigation, police said. 

It is unclear if the parents will face charges for their children’s actions.

Former Prosecutor Steven Clark told ABC 7 it is unlikely. 

‘This isn’t like leaving a gun around for a kid. This is an automobile that we use every day, and this is the kind of thing that you’re used to just leaving your car keys out,’ he told the outlet.  

‘The law doesn’t have an exact remedy for this. It is a crime that the seven-year-old committed, but we’re not going to put a seven-year-old in juvenile hall.’
