Nigel Farage insisted he can ‘fix’ Britain today as he tried to rally Reform activists amid flagging polls and a donations row.

The Brexit champion vowed to work relentlessly to change the country in his keynote speech to the party’s conference in Birmingham.

Mr Farage’s appearance was delayed for security checks after a flag referring to his £5million gift controversy popped up on stage. 

And, after walking on to fireworks, Mr Farage had only just started speaking when a protester started shouting about climate change. 

‘Boring, boring,’ he said as the woman was carried out of the hall. 

The speech was repeatedly disrupted as more people, brandishing banners with slogans including ‘Reform works for billionaires’, had to be removed.

When he was able to make progress in his address, Mr Farage dismissed the ‘sting’ where he and other top aides were filmed speaking to fake donors as a ‘little local difficulty’. 

But he acknowledged that James Orr and Dan Jukes – who stepped aside today as policy chief and his main assistant – had made potentially unacceptable comments. 

‘I repeat, Reform has broken no law,’ he said.

Mr Farage also tried to flesh out some of Reform’s plans for Government, hinting that details of tax cuts are coming soon.  

The rallying message came after Mr Farage unveiled a pact with French firebrand Jordan Bardella to stop Channel boats ‘forever’.

Mr Bardella told the Reform conference that if his National Rally party wins elections next year France will no longer be a ‘gateway for illegal migration into the UK’. 

He joined Mr Farage on stage to sign a deal that would allow thousands of would-be migrants to be returned after entering British waters.

The agreement is at the heart of Reform’s vow to bring the crisis to an end within 100 days of taking power. 

Mr Bardella told activists in Birmingham: ‘The English Channel must no longer be an immigration route to Dover and Folkestone.

‘The destination of illegal migrants entering France should not be the United Kingdom, they should be returned to their countries of origin.’

He continued: ‘We must put an end to these deadly routes, we must break the smuggler business model and together we must take control of our borders.’

Thanking Mr Bardella, Mr Farage said he was forging a new ‘entente cordiale’ with France. 

He said Reform and the National Rally were signing a memorandum of understanding on stopping the boats.

Announcing the pact, Mr Farage said: ‘We are about to sign an historic document that will stop the boats forever.’

The deal would see illegal migrants who crossed the Channel from France returned to the country by the Royal Navy.

‘This is a momentous agreement and shows that both Reform UK and the National Rally are serious about stopping the illegal migrant invasion, fixing our borders, and putting our own people first,’ the Reform leader said. 

The National Rally is regarded by many as the favourite to win French elections next year. Mr Bardella is hoping to become prime minister, while Marine Le Pen is competing to succeed Emmanuel Macron as president. 

In his speech, the Reform leader said he would declare a ‘national emergency’ on his first day in government, introducing a flood of legislation and doing ‘anything and everything’ to deliver his party’s policies.

He said: ‘Within days of winning the general election, we will introduce dozens of Bills and force Parliament to sit all through summer for seven days a week to pass them.

‘Britain is in serious trouble. We don’t have time to wait around to fix it.’

In a threat to peers, Mr Farage said: “I expect the House of Lords to honour that, as they’ve done with the Salisbury Convention for over a century. But if they don’t, well we will present them with an idea.

“It’s not a new one, it has been used before. We’ll appoint hundreds of new peers so that we have a majority in the House of Lords.

“And if that proves difficult, we will hold a referendum on the current composition of the House of Lords, and they would be swept away by a British public appalled by them.”

Painting the controversy over finances as part of a conspiracy to block Reform from power, Mr Farage said: ‘We have been the subject of a highly co-ordinated campaign of attacks.

‘In a sense, it’s not surprising. If you think about it, two parties have dominated British politics for over 100 years.

‘And around them is a whole ecosystem of membership of the House of Lords, the issuance of government contracts, heads of quangos, and so much else, a whole ecosystem around the century-old two-party system.

‘And we come along and threaten that. They were never going to come out with a tray of gin and tonics, I promise you.

‘But I promise you, we will not be distracted by any of this. We are absolutely determined in what we’re doing.’

He said: ‘Ask yourself, why is all of this happening? Anyone got a clue why it’s happening? Because they’re scared of us. That’s why it’s happening.

‘And in my case, I’ve broken no laws, abused no public money. I haven’t even got a motorhome, believe you me.

‘I’m accused of non-declaration of a personal gift, a personal gift that might just keep me alive.

‘But I couldn’t wait forever. I couldn’t wait for six months or a year for this committee to decide. 

‘So I said, ”Right. I tell you what, the voters of Clacton, they can be my judge.” And the people of Clacton have decided with an emphatic win.’
